LOL. DH has managed to get in touch with his cousin...shewas out Mt Pleasant, near Recliffs and haas escaped to TeAnau to be with her Daughter and Son in law. She was in the house at the time and managed to get into the bathroom...her house waas extensively damaged, so she got in her car and drove up the drive and just sat in the car until her Daughter got to here after driving up from TeAnau. House is basically had it. One thing she did do when she went back today briefly, was to change her answerphone message to say that she was ok and where she was...which is a geat idea so people know you are ok.

The Recipes Board is fantastic, a community.Like any community there will be people you love, people you tolerate and people you hope never to meet again. The earthquake reminds us of what is important, but we soon forget as we go about our daily lives and return to normality, wrapped up with our own worries, sadness and happiness.

I have received a great deal of help on here, have been laughed at, and laughed with other posters, been very annoyed and shed a tear.Recipes Board is alive, well and vibrant just the type of community you want to be part of and to be honest I would not want it any other way.

My grandmother has many many beautiful tea cups and even the old style small coffee cups that she inherited from her mother. Since I was a little child I have loved looking at them and once we even used them! My mother has a gorgeous rosebud breakfast set...on my birthday i would get breakfast in this.

Cooks, that is a good idea re the answerphone. Another for TM members is to change their profile. Facebook users are asked to post a message on a Chch person's page if they know that person is OK so other friends can see it too. Aren't we luck these days to have such quick technology and social networks. I know many people scoff at the idea but in this case it has been a lifesaver.

nzhel, I have just come from a thread where there's a "stinging uncalled for reply"and have decided personally - especially post-earthquake - not to rise to the bait or be goaded into defending a position, or another poster under attack.

I think that sort of post is best ignored - difficult though it is to do sometimes.245sam has always done it gracefully by going to a post before the nasty one and addressing that.

On the tea front, My mother used to get the New Zealand Woman's Weekly mailed on to her secondhand from her mother and there was a section called 'Over the Teacups'.I don't know if that column still exists, but there's something about teacups that is gentler and more relaxed than coffeecups - which to me suggest hurry and moving on...

As this is a recipe thread, what's everyone's tips for the perfect cuppa?

I'm looking at some of the old china teacups around here with new eyes today. Some will get dusted off and put back into service!

It's more of a post-earthquake Recipe-related comfort thread BJ.

I like my cup of tea however it is served to me - the only two requirements are that it be hot and wet.

On the other hand, I will even drink it luke-warm or cold, if I have been distracted by conversation. If you have a teapot and a jug to reboil nearby, you can top it up for me.I am just not fussed about oxygenated water, a rolling boil and all that fussy stuff.Though I don't mind at all if a visitor hovers over me to get theirs just right :)

Start with a good quality espresso machine, a good grinder, Supreme beans, and you're on your way.

Lol Knowsley - I can almost smell that coffee! Mmm!
I remember being taught how to make tea when I was little - it was a serious business and made me feel very grown-up!

I had coffee drinkers at Christmas and they were SO difficult ;)One brought his own filter thingy, another brought a new 2-cup Espresso gurgling gizmo for the stove-top and all had set ideas about what constituted the right beans. They settled on locally roasted Fair Trade beans, but even then there was amicable disagreement about the 'notes' (if that's what you call 'winey aftertaste', which was on one packet).

Serious coffee drinkers appear to be in the same league as wine buffs. Some tea drinkers can be snooty/supercilious too, but they don't crook the little pinky finger any more ;)

Like tea (I guess, I'm not a tea drinker), there is a lot of taste difference in coffee beans. While I don't consider myself a coffee snob, I find it hard to see the attraction in instant coffee. I don't mind plunger, although I find it only a few steps above instant. A well made, espressed coffee, is a thing of beauty. :o)
