Now that everyone is making bread in a slow cooker, does anyone have a Cascade beadmaker they would like to sell? (they are an old brand & not made any more)... however I am also looking forward to making this yummy sounding bread in my c/p.

I am interested if anyone making bread in their slow cooker or if there is anyone who wants to make bread in their slow cooker! I have a wonderful wholemeal bread recipe which I make in my slow cooker about once a week. I cut the loaf and then freeze it and only take out the number of slices I actually want to eat and then I toast them for my breakfast every morning. Cheers

I'd love the recipe - sounds awesome.

so just checking you preheat the slow cooker! sounds yum might me my weekend trial!

What a great idea onekiwigirl! What yeast do you use - is Surebake ok! Also I am fortunate to have two slow cookers - one of the old Sunbeam ones (it would be 30 yrs old!) and a newer bigger Kambrook cooker. The Kambrook is a lot quicker and hotter than the Sunbeam I've found. This would make a difference to cooking something such as bread I would imagine. Does Robyn Martin give any timing suggestions for various cookers!

sorry if I missed it in the instructions, but at what stage do you add the optional seeds etc! With a bread maker it is done a little bit later than the main ingredients.
Thanks - it looks a really interesting recipe

I've made 2 loaves and both have turned out fantastic. It is so easy and quicker than my bread machine. Thanks for sharing the recipie.

That is so great to hear, I guess you will be making them in the slowcooker in the future.Any chance of taking a photo and posting the link!

Thanks for sharing. I really want to try this.

One question though, what size is your slow cooker! I only have a small slow cooker - might have to halve the recipe.

onekiwigirl, Feb 17, 12:32am
I have just looked to see what size my cooker is and it doesn't say, but I know that it is the large one. If I was you I would half the recipe for the small sized cooker and then see how far up the the bread rises in the bowl.I guess half would take less time, so I would cook for at least 1 and 1/4 hours then look, if firm on the top and brown on the side it will be cooked and then just needs browning under the grill for a few minutes.

Hi onekiwigirl.I am so impressed with the look of this bread!I'm going to have to have a go at making it.Thank you so much for posting the recipe.
What yeast would you recommend /do you use and is it available at the supermarket!.I have Surebake in the pantry but would rather use your tried and true product. Many thanks for your help.

hmm I just made this. Yes used surebake and did the initial mix in the breadmaker.
I'm disappointed it didn't rise as much as yours seems to have done.
It looks great but not very high, is under grill at present so will see what its like once cut and tasted. It hasn't sunk in middle but it may due to being dropped on its head when I got it out of slow cooker. I may also have had the slow cooker too warm when I put the bread dough in. So will experiment again.
Recipe is good and easy to follow.

mmm tastes fine, but a little chewy but then that is how vogels tastes to me so yep It'll do for toast as that is all I use bread for anyway.
Will try again, I think after much mulling over I heated the slow cooker too long, so the bread didn't really get a chance to rise properly. Ah well all a failure is, is a learning curve. I love experimenting with food, tastes, flavours and recipes. I have heaps of self recipes and if I don't write down what I do at the time then the next one is again an experiment to see if I can reproduce the last version lol.

I just made some tonight but couldn't let it rest overnight & it's half gone already (thanks to the kids lol). I used tasti breadmaker yeast & did the dough in the breadmaker. It rose while cooking that much thatit hit the lid of my zip 5L crockpot. Grilled it in oven & perfect :)

Is a slow cooker the same thing as a crock pot!

nzhel, Feb 18, 5:21am
I made the bread today too. Firstly I looked thru my crockpot cook books to see if any had bread recipes - and silly me had the Robyn Martin one with the recipe which I had marked to make sometime and promptly forgotten about!
My bread ended up spreading to the same size as the bottom of the cooker and didn't rise overly high. My cooker gets extremely hot so I felt the bread was probably cooked in 1½ hours but I left it in for 2 hours as per the recipe just to see how it turned out. It looked and smelt very nice but was slightly dry, so I will cook it for a shorter time next time.
I might also try the recipe out in my old Sunbeam crockpot which doesn't have quite such a fierce heat.
Joan Bishop has a bread recipe in her book too which is cooked in a container surrounded by water like you do a Xmas Pud. I have not tried hers yet.

Mine is in the slow cooker at the moment, and has risen almost to the lid. Can't wait to try it.

"Crock pot" was a brand of slow cooker (I'm not sure if it still exists), but the two expressions seem to be used interchangeably these days, so yes, they are the same thing.

alphaone1, Feb 18, 4:55pm
what a great idea,I'm going to go give it a go when i get some yeast, i will post some pics once i finish making it :) Thank-you for sharing the recipe !
