WOW! Just finished making this bread and my kids can't get enough of it! As I type this Master 3 is asking for another piece with vegemite (we're in ozzie), and Miss 4 and Master 2 are finishing off their 2nd pieces.

Yes, that 1 Tbsp oil should go into the bread, that was in the original recipe. Clearly it works without the oil, your photos look great.I am just blown away and pleased with the popularity of this bread making recipe and all the success the readers are having with it.

I have now been substituting the 1 Tbsp of oil for 1 Tsp of Lecithin granules or Lecithin powder into the mix and that works really well. I have been doing this because I have discovered that Lecithin aids in this process of binding fats and cholesterol to water so that they can be eliminated efficiently by letting them just pass through the body, rather than cause a potentially harmful buildup. As a dietary supplement they suggest to take 600 milligrams (~1/4 tsp) twice a day, or as directed by physician, so I guess you could play around with adding this to your mix as I have been doing and see how you go.

Cheers

I tried this today and thought at that 2 hours it was not "done" as the top looked very moist and very pale, so left it in for some more time.

Have finally pulled it out as the top did not seem to change and it is very crusty.

I have a couple of questions.

How can I tell if it is "done" when the top looks uncooked.
There seems to be a lot of moisture build up on the lid, should I be trying to avoid this and how would I do this.

The photos that were posted on here originally have gone so any more would be great.
TIA

Ok have seen more recent photos..... and mine looks unckked on the top and overcooked on the sides.

In fact I have got the chainsaw out ( just kidding) and hacked into it, Have sliced off all the uncooked and half cooked stuff and some of the hard crust.

The birds are going to have a feast in the morning!.

Just having a look at the size of some of your loaves I think the mixture may have been too much for my crock. It came right to the top. Perhaps I should halve the mixture?

Any help appreciated as I enjoy making it and would love to make it on a regular basis.

Ohh I made this yesterday.....first time Ever making bread and yum yum it came out perfect 8-)
I didnt use any nuts or seeds as it ain't my thing mmmmmmm yum yum i had it with our boil up i cooked for tea.

Sat3.....mine looked a little uncooked on the top after 2 hours you just pop it under the grill to brown up. Mine also rose right to the top and i had a bit of condensation i quickly took the lid off and gave it a wipe after 1 1/2 hours cooking. If you give it a bit of a tap after 2 hours it kind of sounds hallow you will no what i mean next time you cook it.
I also forgot to add the oil in the dough and it came out perfect!

1 question though do you have to add all of the 4 ts of sugar?? can i halve it to 2 ts as it tasted a little sweet.

The bread is best cut with an electric knife the next day.

You can see on the second photo that the bread has been put under the grill to brown it on top.

The third photo just shows the bread in the slow cooker being baked, yes there is condensation on the lid and that is just fine, it drips on the side of the bowl and evaporates and then at the end when you lift the lid off make sure that you hold it level so that the condensation on the lid doesn't drop on the bread.

Cheers

l make mine every few days and l have never added the oil and it comes out really nice

l wipe the inside of the lid after about an hr or so or when the condensation builds up as it keeps the middle really soggy, l cook mine for around 2 1/2 hrs because it has a lot of extras in it but l tap the top after 2hrs to check it and wipe the inside of the lid

When it is cooked l put it under the grill to brown the top and it comes out really nice

l add all sorts of seeds etc to it and everyone who tries it loves it
l won't be using my bread maker anymore as this is the easiest recipe around and l have never been able to make bread before this recipe

And I for one will not replace my breadmaker should it give up. As this"gadget" does the job just as well. Bit of baking paper in the bottom does the trick, can be used several times. I find 2 hours and ten minutes a good time. Love the thick crust it produces. Next trial will be a pure white loaf.

Does anyone please have a recipe for a plain white loaf in the crockpot please. Would love to have a go at making bread but my tribe prefer white bread. Any help appreciated please. TIA

popeye333, May 16, 6:21pm
An awesome thread....I heard that people were making bread in the crockpot and was blown away with the photos in here.
I use a breadmaker cos I cannot knead bread by hand.
But I will save this thread. Incase onedfay the breadmaker stops working.. Cos I have two crockpots.

onekiwigirl, May 16, 11:05pm
I actually use the bread maker to mix and knead the dough by using it on the dough setting, then I place in the slow cooker.

Cheers

Bumping for a yummy white bread recipe please anyone. Thanks

westigal, May 17, 7:28am
Bump, too good to loose.
Fruit bread turned out really well, just added a handful of raisins, 2 tsp cinnamon. 1 tsp 5 spice, pinch cloves and used basic recipe.
cheese and onion bread, yum yum
finely chopped onion 3/4 cup, lightly cooked first and 1/2 cup parmesan cheese - great with casserole the other night.
Saving so much money on bread and getting a good arm work out as well.
Thanks onekiwigirl, you are famous, I am sharing your recipe with all my friends, giving you full credit of course
