Instant noodles in the cups are great for camping and most kids love them.

tarankyle, Dec 3, 7:49am

I love all these ideas. This thread has revived and interest in camping.I'm thinking of taking my boys camping after reading this thread.Thank you tarankyle for starting it.

home made bacon and egg pie, cold sasage rolls are also great to take. Also make sure to take a tarpolin or two, they make great shelter for shade or if the rain comes. Easy to tie them to some trees or make some poles with some large sturdy branches.

I am glad it has helped someone else out too :-)There are some great tips on here!I know now thanks to this thread we will have a great time camping with all the pre planning

winnie231, Dec 5, 2:14am
Another tip re. tarpolins ... buy one which is atleast as big as the floor of your tent (you can always fold the extra under) and set your tent up on it.
Not only does it help protect the floor of your tent from being damaged by stones, sticks, etc ... it also makes packing up alot easier as the bottom of your tent stays clean.

We camp every year no power or generator but we do have a gas fridge. We freeze 2 litres bottles of milk put these in a chilly bin with frozen meat. Cover the chilly bin with wet sack and keep it wet every day.Put chilly bin in shady placeDon't open the chilly bin until absoultely necessary and after that no more than once a day.Keeps frozen for 5 to 7 days.Milk is good to use after that length of time too.Sometimes we freeze lemonade it stays fizzy once thawed.

If you can cook pasta then a couple of tins of pasta sauce would be useful.

tarankyle, Dec 6, 10:42pm
I have just been given a pot that you can cook things in then place the lid back on & it keeps the food at the same temp for about 2hrs. Going to come in very handy :-)

tarankyle, Dec 7, 11:43pm
Does anyone know how many of the gas cans I would need for the cooker that I brought? Awe are away for about a week.

We are going camping with mr 4 and miss 3 in January. First time. One thing I have thought up and havnt seen it mentioned here yet is glow sticks for the kids at night. Both my 2 sleep with lights on and get scared of the dark. Have bought a few packets of glow sticks to hang in the tent when they go to bed. And the cheap ones I will put on the edge of tent ropes and anything else that may be tripped over in the night. We are going to Taupo - cant wait.

Bumping for a new camping season .

camper18, Oct 26, 9:14pm
Re the glow sticks for lights - We bought cheap garden lights that stick in the groundand put them at the end of the tent pegs to stop people tripping in the dark and a lighted path to the long drop, ( we camped on private land) Leave them outside for a week before you go and they will be charged up when you get there.

we are going away with the kids camping this new years & I am after some ideas for dinners other than just BBQ and salad every night. I thought about doing mince wraps too as that will be easy, any other ideas please!

neville26, Nov 8, 6:57am
stirfrys, hamburgers, pasta and mince, sweetcorn fritters, pancakes fish cakes.

jfr, Nov 8, 7:09am
We camp at a lot of the DOC campsites & they have the open campfires available for campfire cooking. (Kids love it).Nice to sit around a campfire at night talking & toasting marshmallows. I use a Dutch oven & BBQ charcoal to cook stews, cakes & desserts. Search the net. some great ideas are available.

our kids love chicken or beef satay on little skewers. I make them in advance, freeze them and hey presto they cook in minutes on the barbie, a quick green salad and some bread rolls and that's all you need.
