Hey Subo I am in Western Australia at the moment on holiday. While in the Kimberley area I gave this recipe to 3 ladies on a boat trip who I heard say they couldnt make scones. Wrote it on a serviette so now your recipe is moving around Australia.

Great recipe thanks But I HATE the SR flour taste. So tried to make them w/ 1 tsp baking pwdr per c flour & they're not as light or fluffy. So compromised w/ 1/2 SR flour & 1/2 plain w/ baking pwdr & they were almost as good but tasted better than full SR flour.

I don't know why SR tastes so yuck but the scone recipe is wonderful.

samsnan. It is so good to share simple recipes to help people who normally wouldn't bake too. There are others here that have given the recipe to their kids flatting in the UK doing their big OE.

janny3 My understanding is that the sodium aluminum sulfate from the baking powder in self raising flour causes the acidic taste. I haven't tried this but it may work. To 3 cups plain flour (not high grade). Sift together 2 tesp cornflour or arrowroot, 1 tesp baking soda, 1 tesp cream of tartar... sift into flour. You might like to experiment and let us know.

Tea towel to the rescue. Try putting them under a vlean tea towel when they came out of the oven. That will allow for a bit of steam to stay in longer until they cool.
