Subo, what brand of self raising flour is a "high quality brand"? Thanks for sharing. I haven't needed to make them yet but plan to. Thank-you Charlie b2 for starting the thread and thereby bringing to my attention-it pays to say "thank-you".

Always check use by date. For example May 2009 is on mine at the moment so it should be fresh. Champion is what I am using at the moment. Edmonds, Elfin are others. I prefer not to use the unknown manufactured brands.

in the oven now ! ! doubled the recipe . All seemed a bit wet ... how on earth can you roll these squishy masses ? perhaps i messed up my doubling . .
Has anyone worked out the milk needed rather than the measurement with egg/butter . . YKWIM . . ? ?

lisa7, Oct 23, 9:29pm
I just add 1 & 1/2 cups milk and a wee bit less if I am doing pinwheels.

reposted from another thread ... . . Melt 50g butter in a 2cup jug. Whisk in 1 egg. Make up to 2 cups with milk. Add to 3 to 4 cups of self-raising flour and mix with a knife. Oven at 230oC for about 10 mins. Hope you enjoy them! Yummo! ... . . I warm the milk and add chopped dates and let it stand for an hour or so then make as above. I also don't use SF flour so its 2 tspns per cup and you want it to be a wet mix:) Enjoy! !

Bump!

lindi4, Oct 29, 9:40pm
So once the mix is turned with a knife do you then give it a wee knead or turn it out onto floured bench and pat it into shape and cut it into what sized portions for baking? ? ? ? ? ... I tried putting a cup over dough and cutting round shapes. . not sure about height and size... that's all.

bump :-))

No you don't have to knead. I just flop it straight out onto the baking paper on the tray with the knife. It is sloppy so spread out lightly with the knife. Keeping the edge of the knife clean, press cut lines one way then the other. As you would if making buns. They don't have to be separated as they can be broken or cut apart when cooked. My hands don't even touch them. However if you do want to separate them, wet fingers and a wet knife does the job. Anything goes with this recipe... . . lol.

lindi4, Oct 30, 4:51am
Thanks for that. that's the way I like it! ! ! Also thanks Subo for dedicating so much of your time to the scone thread! ! ! !

These would have to be one of the easiest things that just about everyone likes that can be made in 20 mins. Great as a loaf shape with cheese on top to slice too... . . lol. So basic that it lends itself to pretty much anything as you can see what others have done through this thread.

charlieb2, Oct 30, 9:47am
subo. . thanks AGAIN... Thats a great way to do it. I've been putting the mix on the floured bench and patting out and cutting. . will try your technique next time I make them as scones. I made cheesy-mite scrolls on Tuesday with this recipe... .

Big thanks to you charlieb2 for starting this thread. So fantastic that people come back to tell us what else can be done.

Hi there - I am not the greatest of bakers and was watching the Nestle Baker of the Year the other night on TV and they were making scones. Scones as from most people that have done a post is not the one of the most successful things to make. So had a looksie on the internet and found this recipe. I have just made the recipe and am looking through the oven window watching them turn from something wet and sticky to absolutely delicious looking in 10mins. My mouth is watering and can't wait to get those puppies out of the oven and cooled down a little (just a little that is) to eat. It has been successful so far, so will let you know how they taste. But they smell delicious. I am making sultana scones but haven't put any sugar in them, will this make a difference? - Thanks ever so much for this BRILLIANT recipe... ... will talk again soon... ...

raureti, Feb 14, 5:19am
Hi again - made the scones and my husband ate like 3 one after the after. OMG they taste really good. I am heating the oven up again and gonna make them another go and take some to work. Thanks again for the great recipe.

charlieb2, Feb 14, 5:28am
Lol... raureti... . glad to hear they were successful... ...

littlemisslibra, Feb 16, 7:57pm
Thanks for the recipe! Got my first batch in the oven now, smelling pretty good! If these turn out well I will be over the moon, my scones have never been any good before. Fingers crossed!

littlemisslibra, Feb 16, 8:25pm
We have a winner! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Thanks so much, cant wait to try the variations others have suggested.

Sorry to bring up the distant past, but being male, I'm going to surprise my beloved tonight with these when she walks in the door ... only ... "large cup" ... is that a heaped measuring cup? or is it a regular coffee cup off the shelf filled up, being more than a measured cup? Sorry if this Q? sounds confusing but I know exactly what I mean ... . what is "large" please ?
Have to start baking in about 30 minutes ... so no pressure.

kawboy, Feb 24, 3:01am
Boss just called to say she's on her way out the door, so I'm going to stab in the dark and say heaped measuring cup ... . and hope I got it right.
Thanks peoples.

charlieb2, Feb 24, 3:04am
Possibly too late for this time... but I just use a standard measuring cup and have a slight mound on the top instead of flattening it... .

Hope that makes sense! ! ? ? ?

Good luck
