Hi earthangel4. Would you post the recipe for the eggless quiche and would you also be able to tell me what the ingredients in the sausage rolls and mince pies are - particularly any pastry used, thanks (some flour mixes that some bakeries use have skim milk powder and whey protein in them).

Hi felixt, have you tried him with the rice for breakfast idea yet?If so did he like it....if not you could try using white rice :)

zub26, Nov 2, 8:46pm
HI fleixt, How about trying hash browns ( we buy the tri browns from watties) bacon or a sausage from brekkie. It might be time consuming but worth getting up a bit earlier. Smoothies made from soy or rice milk and honey, fruit and soy yoghurt, we make a big one and put some in a flask for school. Lunches are some times a gf pasta salad with cold meats (chicken, left over sausage from brekkie,)ham, corn and spring onion with rice.
Rice crackers and hummus (or dip as my daughter calls it) cherry tomatoes, jelly and fruit, homemade muffins and bikkies.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for those ideas zub.I did some research on hams and this is what I found out: Carrageenan (seaweed) can be added to the gel used when making a ham. Carrageenan is a gum and can cause diarrhoea. Wheat starch, gluten and sodium caseinate can be in the brine used too so some people may need to be careful there, esp with Xmas looming :)

Hereka - I made a mango cake with very similar ingredients except strawberry and it wasnt anything special.Had had brilliant mango-almond cake in Oz so wanted to copy here.Think you must need fresh mango to get real zing.

Vita Weat crackers
Just a warning for coeliacs the new Vita Weat crackers are not gluten free ,for some crackpot reason they have added wheat to the rice .
I discovered this the hard way ,a query to Arnotts produced a "read the ingredients" reply

Hi, they used to sell them at Countdown and New World stores but some places dont have them, otherwise you may need to try a specialty type shop, such as a health shop or similar :)

Last time I checked Watties hash browns were not GF

Hi all
I need some help regarding GF.Hubby & I do not have any gluten issues but we are having some friends over for a BBQ on the weekend and she is gluten intollerant. What we normally have a for a BBQ is steak, suasages, prawns, fish, onions just grilled on the BBQ and then I do a basic coleslaw (cabbage, carrot, spring onion, capsicum and no dressing) and a potoato salad (normally just boiled spuds with some commercal potato salad dressing on it and sour cream).I don't know anything about gluten intollerance so hope you might give me an idea on how that menu looks from her point of view.I was also thinking of just doing a fresh fruit salad and maybe pav and brandy snaps with cream. Is that ok?
Thanks so much - I want to make some effort to cater for her so any suggestions and tips would be really appreciated.
Regards
Raewyn

What about oats? What’s the general consensus with oats and celiac disease or gluten intolerances?

herika, Nov 21, 7:36pm
Hi,
Oats have a protein (avenin) that is similar to gluten and most rolled oats are contaminated with gluten unfortunately so aren't gluten free.
Harroways of Dunedin are very careful to reduce the contamination problem but never claim theirs are gluten free :)

herika, Nov 21, 7:39pm
Hi, unfortunately a lot of what you suggest probably wouldnt be suitable andas you dont know anything about gluten intolerance I think the best thing for you to do would be to ask her exactly what she can and cant have then you will be able to do food she can safely eat.

clelandstimber, Nov 21, 9:06pm
Thanks herika will avoid oats also then :)

I just got diagnosed on Friday and popped out to Bin Inn, there is some gluten free pasta in bags that is just over $2 each. I brought some and have had a few times and find it tastes just as good as normal pasta.I also recommend checking out the other range at Bin Inn I found them to be very helpful with lots of information that wasn't too overwhelming and a good range of gluten free foods that weren't expensive.

As my above post, was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease on Friday, knew it had been coming for the last 10 years or so, also have Type 1 Diabetes so it just means more changes to my diet. Felt very over whelmed with the news of a gluten free diet as being so close to xmas the dietition and specialist can't see me till February so have walked away from my gps feeling a little unsure of what to do. Have looked a round a bit on the net but it is slightly overwhelming with all the information and not being sure if it is all accurate etc.Went to Bin Inn found that helpful and prices cheaper but would like to get to know some others who have Coeliac that can guide me with tips and what not. I am 31 female from New Plymouth. Thanks in advance to anyone who can lend some tips and support :) Hope everyone is doing well

Hi kylene,
I find the "hidden gluten" the trickiest thing about being gluten intolerant.I find Bin Inn good for the rice and maize corn flour etc that I get there but I be careful about some of the other gluten free foods they have, esp anything in a packet or pre prepared. I find having fresh food helps me avoid any mishaps, it does mean a bit more time cooking but well worth it - stir frys and similar types of meals are great because you can use different veges, herbs, spices etc and have a good variety.
Since Ive sorted out everything I can and cant have Im finding Im much healthier and have my energy back.Hopefully this thread will be of help to you, have a great day :)

You could make your own:use grated potato and onion, mix with egg, and herbs such as marjoram, dill, tarragon, parsley etc :)

We had a lovely buffet style meal out recently and I just had to make sure I only had plain meat (chicken and beef), veges - boiled or roasted potatoes, pumpkin, carrot, kumara and broccoli, no sauces or gravies. For dessert I had fresh fruit salad and pavlova.(Pavlova is GF if made with GF cornflour and GF vinegar).
I asked about GF options and was assured by what I was told they knew and understood what gluten free meant and was able to enjoy the meal with confidence.
