early.
Have my sis coming over on thurs from brisbane and she says bananas last week $15 per kilo. P.Save had them for under $2.00 today, so picked out a huge bunch of realy green ones. How can I stop them from going too ripe.

urbanproject, Apr 30, 11:25pm
Put them in the fridge.

lindylambchops1, May 1, 12:22am
eat them lol

cottagerose, May 1, 2:03am
They will go black in the fridge

sah5, May 1, 2:06am
I have heard that by separating each banana from the bunch will slow the ripening process, don't know if it works.

The banana peel will go black.

jessie981, May 1, 2:14am
Peel may go black but inside will be fine.

Separate them, wrap each one tightly in tinfoil and store in vege crisper in fridge. The skins will darken but the bananas will stay firm. I can keep them for up to a week.

I keep mine in a cool place -a back store room & if it's a bit cooler they don't ripen near as fast as those I have in the fruit bowl in the kitchen. I think the fridge is a bit cold really,

keep em away from apples for one...:}

the skin will go black in the fridge - the fruit will be fine to eat - but the look will put you off

I agree - there is something which is released by the bananas which ripens fruit.
which is why you shouldn't keep bananas in the fruit bowl with other fruit.

they also ripen each other.

if you position the bananas so this hormone (???) disapates, then it slows the ripening.

One option is hanging them - you can get "banana trees" for this purpose - or using a piece of string and hanging them from a cupboard door handle...

or separating them from the bunch and lying them separately is better than nothing

mmmm, well, firstly i have put them in a big brown paper bag in back of cupboard. BUT will check them tomorrow and maybe seperate them.
lots of theories, so will be back here with a report later inthe week.thanks all

Boil green bananas in a pot with a little oil and is cooked when the skin splits.

Eat like potatoes, yum....

duckmoon, May 3, 4:59am
how are the bananas going?

kob, May 3, 2:04pm
fruit & vege shops have there in a box covered with a plastic bag and kept in the frige, why cant you, they do not go black as long as you cover them

fishergrl, May 3, 4:31pm
