My grandmother who was born in 1900 says she learnt how to bake a Pav when she was a girl though it wasn't called that then it was renamed the year that Anna Pavlova visited. But might be difficult to check those facts as she died 20yrs ago but she lived in Onehunga then and I'm sure the Aussies baked merangue type cakes before Anna as well they may have just been slower with the name thing.
