Also Steve Raichlen's "How to Grill" is a great book, apart from the section on the discredited beer can chicken.
The basics are learn about direct (coals under food) vs indirect (coals around food) grilling, get one or two thermometers, use a chimney starter.

Tell us what you want to do. I like to do roasts in mine particularly Pork shoulder. Best with fatty meats as the fat cooks out so well. I personally like charcoal rather than brickettes. They also do really good smoked fish.
