How do you cook onions on bbq?

I loved onions on the bbq - but we can't seem to get them nicely cooked so they are caramelised... how do you do it?

I slice them then toss in oil and salt, then give to DH to cook.
You need to do them on the hot part of bbq grill plate or put them on early and move to a cooler area to continue cooking.

We always pour beer over ours and take them off before they are over cooked - still have bit of crunch to them.

Cut into thick (not under 1cm) 'rings' and push a skewer through the side and out the other, and push another in the top (to make a X shape) season with what ever you wish and lay on the hot plate or grill.Keeps them together and they cook lovely, they almost make this gorgeous soft onion 'patty', very nice.

Patience.

just a spoonful of sugar on them will caramalise.

We use a teflon mat to cook our onions... put on early as they will take about 20+ mins... when near ready and nicely browned... put on some brown sugar and a drizzle of red wine vinegar... stir all up to coat...

A good idea is to par cook the onions in the microwave beforehand, then they can be cooked on BBQ quickly
