If you were in a hurry you wouldn't be using a slow cooker would you?

litedelites, May 20, 3:42am
love using mine to make mac and cheese (a little bit healthy, as made with water and not milk, much to the suprise of everyone who eats it). T

I have 2 . A large oval and a small round one. Brilliant for cooking pulses. I cook chickpeas and then freeze them in 1.5 cup amounts(= a tin) so handy for curries or hummus.I do looks of different beans .Great instructions for cooking them in the Alison holst book.

Wouldnt be without a SLOW COOKER OR CROCKPOT, got 2.Even do Beetroot in them, cook them up and then bottle them in Vinegar.Get Alison & Simon HOLST'S COOKBOOK FOR SLOW COOKERS, its brillaint.Between my Crockpot and Freezer got meals sorted.Pea and Ham Soup, if Hocks too expensive, get Bacon Pieces, I do Silverside in it, then finisheed off in the OVEN, covering it with a mustard sauce and grilling it, it turns out like Ham.

they are wonderful for cooking.especially if you are working.you can cook your meal while you are sleeping or at work.I put meat and veges together the food is always perfectly cooked.I highly reccomend that you get one.you will not regret it

lakinmae, May 20, 12:35pm
you don't need any packets etc.just do as you usually do.brown meat first, then add your other ingredients and let the crockpot cook it on slow.delicous

...Well perhaps I should have added 'if you are in a hurry in the mornings before you go to work and want to get something started in your crockpot to come home to for tea.....'

Yep. any horrible old cut of meat turns out nice in a Crockpot. I lay in the veges (pumpkin, carrot, kumara, potato) cut into 1" squares, then lay the meat on top cut up into larger pieces, then broccolli, whole button mushrooms & peas on the top. I then pour 1 brown onion gravy mix, 1 chicken gravy mix & 1 roast meat gravy mix into the blender along with a can of coconut milk, some steak sauce, black pepper & salt. Mix it thoroughly & pour over the top. Medium heat for 6-8hrs & yum yum. Gives us 2 meals & usually some left over to pour over the dogs dinner as well.

rockdale1, May 22, 8:34pm

i use mine probably 4 times a week when i know im late home with kids sports.I do bolar roast, stew, that sort of thing.the thing to remember is not to use too much water as the water stays in crock pot and does not evaporate. Its good for chucking in spuds etc, and when you get home they are lovely to take out and then crisp off in oven, they are full of flavour as cooked in juices

blyme_jerv, May 24, 12:01am
ps, if getting one get one with auto, you can get it nearly finished early and then turn on auto.I have never had a luke warm meal come out of one as stated by someone above, this is of slight concern as any bacteria that happen to be present wont be killed.

I don't use mine nearly as much as I should,(mainly because it's too damn heavy to lift in and out of the cupboard) so you inspired me to get it back out of the cupboard. While I was out, DH put the corned beef in it for me, but he has put in a lot of water. He is adamant the corned beef needs to be fully covered in water, whilst I say around 2 cups of water. Who is right? What do others do?
Also with whole chickens do you need to add any water.? I have only ever used mine for soups and stews.

kay141, May 24, 2:15am
I used one of Alison Holst corned beef recipes at the weekend. She said 2 cups of hot water for a 1.5k piece nad turn it over halfway through if you are near it.. Mine was a bit less but I used 2 cups, turned it and it was delicious. When I used to cook it in a pot, I covered it but not in the crockpot.

Thanks kay 141. much appreciated.

Kinna I only put in 1/4 cup Brown Vinegar and 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar, nothing else - cook on low approx 8 hours and mine always turns out mouth watering.

kinna54, May 24, 9:55am
I took out most of the water, added some golden syrup and touch of garlic, it was absolutely beautiful.
Thanks for your tips, jenstarr I am very keen to try your hints next time. Thankyou both for the tips.

i do chickens, only put a smidge of water, you will be surprised how much liquid comes out of a chook!they tend to fall apart a bit, but are tender, I usually put breast down, so its imsersed in juice. corn beef....only a bit of water, i usually slice apples up on top to stop it getting dry and turn over at some point

t.gypsy, May 25, 12:03am

Gunna do a hangi in it this weekend we have our chicken, pork and lamb put aside. and the veges too. ready to assemble on sunday morning starting at high for first part of the morning then turning it to low just after lunch and hope it works...
