FYI: bananas.

I have started to purchase fair trade bananas.
It costs about an extra dollar per bunch.
It fits my sense of ethics. And it is a choice I can afford to make.

Anyway, I have been purchasing them at the local supermarket AND, i have great news.
The bananas last longer.
By about day 3, the regular bananas were on the turn, more yellow/brown than I would prefer to eat.

The fairtrade bananas don't seem to turn until Day 8-10... Which is great.I can purchase two bunches, and I don't have over-brown bananas which I need to turn into muffins...

YEAH, YEAH, YEAH.
thought it was an un-intended consequences which was worth sharing.
(have also mentioned this in parenting)

Also some one on here mentioned pulling the bananas apart when storing them to stop them ripening as fast. Sure does work. I have done it to my last two bunchs.

I can tell you why... Bananas let off a feramone (??).which means that they ripen... the more feramone, the faster the ripening.
But either by separating them (as bcnd has noticed), or using a banana tree (which means that they hang) means that the feramone disapates, rather than hangs around...
