buttercream icing states , use unsalted butter, would it make any difference to the icing if I used salted butter, butter is so expensive and unsalted butter more so.

it will be fine, and i have also used margarine, especially if going to colour it.

I never bother with unsalted butter - every recipe I have used always states that you add salt to it the recipe anyway - all of my baking turns out delicious regardless.
