Rum.
We have tried in vodka, gin and rum on different occasions. Rum is the way to go.

We made damson vodka last year, oh my god it is awesome. Takes 12-18 months but we are drinking it after 12 months and when we took the damsons out of the vodka we stored them in a jar in the fridge and they were so nice. As vodka is pretty neutral flavoured it totally took on the damson flavour. We used a Hugh Fearnley-Whittinstall recipe. Damson's are ripening now so I am sure we will make another batch. ps. I don't normally drink vodka but this is something special.

We have done the same with mandarins. Large jar piled high with mandarins and vodka to the top.
