Feijoa & Apple Jam This is a good recipe that I cookin my microwave. You can also add 1/4 cup chopped ginger if you like just before potting.
2 cups feijoas, 2 cups apples, juice 2 lemons, 1/2 cup water, 3 cups sugar.
Put fruit, juice & water into a bowl. Cook on high for 20 mins. Add sugar and stir until dissolved then mic on high for a further 15 mins until setting point reached. Pot and seal.

You can double/treble up recipe if you want, just my preference to do it in small batches

Joining the feijoa fiends... Last year the kiwifruit producers put a little plastic gizmo in their export packs and it's perfect for opening and eating feijoas in the garden.

It's a little plastic scoop with a serrated knife-part on one end that you can carry in your pocket as you forage. Yes, I know you can just crack feijoas open with your thumbnail and suck them, but these are a bit more genteel for use while foraging in public. Our local supermarket has a line of feijoa trees growing in the public carpark :)
Edited to add:The gizmo is great for children's lunchboxes too - an encouragement to eat fruit.

Another Feijoa fiend here! . . This thread is great!
just moved into our new home to find 3 Feijoa trees out the back! YUMMO! , now I'm overloaded with them and collecting bags full every day (and also sneaking next door cos my neighbour doesn't seem to be eating them and they are everywhere and being run over by his car EEEKK! ! (waste not, want not! ), going to start freezing some now I know how, and filling the freezer with cakes and muffins, and then bulk making chutney and jam to give a way or sell.

I have made 2 Feijoa loaves this week and some feijoa bran muffins - been a big hit at work! :D

Just a postscript... I haven't read all the way through the thread to see if this has been mentioned already, but if anyone is thinking of planting a hedge, feijoa trees make a very attractive and productive one.

Feijoa upside-down tart (borrowed from www.stuff.co.nz website)

This baked dessert, created by Virginia McGregor for the New Zealand Feijoa Growers Association, is easy to make and startlingly good to eat. Serves 6-8.

50g butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp golden syrup
7-8 large ripe feijoas, peeled and cut in half lengthways
400g sweet short pastry
Heat oven to 200deg C. Melt butter, sugar, golden syrup together in a pan. Pour mixture into a 23cm round cake pan. Arrange feijoa halves over the mixture.
Roll pastry out in a circle to cover fruit. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until pastry is golden. Remove and stand 10 minutes.
Hold a large plate over the top of the pan and turn upside down so the pastry is on the base of the serving dish. Cut tart into wedges and serve warm.

Just found this thread but haven't got time to read through the whole thing to see if anyone can suggest the best feijoa tree for the Manawatu region. Hubby and daughter love feijoas I hate them so we've decided to plant a couple or 3 trees on our lifestyle block, anyone have any suggestions of best variety for this area and where's the best place to attain said variety specimen plant? Next month my son and his g/f and my grand daughter are coming to stay for her 1st birthday and as I have her placenta in my freezer awaiting to be planted under a tree I thought why not the feijoa tree. I know I know probably too gross for some of you lol
