Shearers, farmhands, tramps.as long as there's a woman at the stove it's a 'family' ;)

rainrain1, Sep 21, 12:58am
I turned a fellow away from my door once, he wanted to work for food and keep.I sent him on his way as there were no men around at the time, and I was quite a young Mum.I have never forgiven myself for the simple fact that I offered him no food to go.He was on foot too, and miles from anywhere. That memory still comes back to haunt me sometimes.

Ah rainrain1 that's a tough one:-) Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and we can't be perfect judges of a situation all the time. You did what you did because you were alone in what may have seemed, a tricky situation. The fact that it still troubles you, makes me think you have a very caring heart, so I am sure that you have made up for it in a thousand ways with others:-)

Sexist chook, us men do that too, I built the kitchen its mine my wife only cooks when I am away.

As for recipes I rarely use them and mainly they are stored on the computer to make them easier to share.

I don't use packets though I have to confess I do have some bisto cubes in the cupboard and some tinned spagetti for the wife and kids you understand, I don't eat it myself.

elliehen, Sep 21, 1:31am
No sexism in this family - full of males who have all been trained to cook for their women ;)

That was directed specifically at rainrain's particular 'family'.the one she 'hovers over' at the table to get them to eat up and clear out!

indy95, Sep 21, 1:33am
Good gracious ! Surely my eyes are deceiving me but I am almost certain I have detected the words " packet " and " gravy " used in the same sentence at least once in this thread. Can it be true !

elliehen, Sep 21, 1:35am
There used to be lots of young men in this district turning up at a farmer's door wanting to work for a meal, and a bed in a shed.

It's in the literature of New Zealand too.

There are some things you just have to forgive yourself for.

elliehen, Sep 21, 1:37am
I'm waiting for 'simmer sauce'!Thunder claps!Fire and brimstone!

beaker59, Sep 21, 1:38am
No need to explain yourself ;) that is what seems to get others here in the firing line LOL

I have to admit I can hover a bit at times mainly because almost all my food is slightly experimental and I am hungry for feedback.

lx4000, Sep 21, 4:02am
mashed pumpkin and the cooking water in my gravy also:)

camac99, Sep 21, 4:34am
Don't know if it is still around, but Heinz used to sell a Baked Bean Pizza in the UK

waswoods, Sep 21, 7:10am
And I use the instant one too!

eastie3, Sep 21, 7:32am
.ya blood's worth bottling for starting this thread sossie, unless that could in any way be regarded as 'authentic' in which case, disregard my comment.

evorotorua, Sep 21, 8:41am
would be authentic if you gathered your own sand, refined it, melted it and blew your own glass for the bottle eastie3. Mind you, it would depend on what authentic food sossie had consumed in the days before we took her blood as to whether the blood could be called authentic.

sossie1, Sep 21, 9:05am
hehehehehe.
My blood would taste of chocolate eclairs

sossie1, Sep 21, 9:08am
And by the way

VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

indy95, Sep 21, 9:11am
Well I suppose I should admit that I do too very occasionally but otherwise steer well clear of packet and ready made sauces.

lizab, Sep 21, 9:30am
Forgive me Sossie, for I have sinned . When I was young and newly married 20 odd years ago, I couldn't cook anything from scratch! I used to buy Frey Bentos steak pies (in a tin) and I even bought canned potatoes and carrots and we actually ATE them!
<leaves thread blushing!>

elliehen, Sep 21, 9:32am
I think that's what was bothering some people, indy.

Many of us cook from scratch, choose fresh produce, avoid over- processed foods etc, but didn't relish being treated as untouchables if we did choose a quick fix option now and again.

I sometimes make gravy from a Bisto packet.

sossie1, Sep 21, 9:32am
You are forgiven my child.

Now go and recite 3 Hail Marys, and make a risotto the slow way for penance.

mazzy1, Sep 21, 10:12am
*swallows. heavily* Breathe, mazzy, breathe.

jennyfenny1, Sep 21, 11:01am
i love spinach but NEVER buy it fresh - just too damn fidly to wash it all properly and get rid of all the grit. frozen all the way.
lazy! well at least im eating greens!

anneliese88, Sep 21, 12:15pm
Last week, I had no Tahini in the house (well it can be expensive these days) so suddenly got the idea to replace it with Peanut butter in my home made falafels.they turned out great (all nutty and crispy).shhhhhh!

beaker59, Sep 21, 2:22pm
Sorry thats actually an authentic variation and often done in Arab nations the Isrealis also use Fava beans in thier falafel I am told (which is actually broad beans)
