FEIJOA SHORTCAKE CRUMBLE
1 large square sheet sweet short pastry
1 egg, beaten
1kg feijoas peeled and sliced
100g hard salted butter
160g self-raising flour
a generous pinch of ground ginger
50g castor sugar
extra butter (optional)

preheat oven 165c fan bake. roll out pastry and line one well greased 23-26cm flan ring with pastry. cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 10 minutes.
remove from fridge line with greaseproof or baking paper and fill with rice or baking beans. bake blind for 10mins - less for smaller tarts.
remove from the oven , remove the beans etc and brush the hot pastry base with beaten egg. place back in the oven to seal the tart shell , 3-4mins for a larger flan, a good minute for the smaller tarts.
place sliced feijoa into tart.
in the food processor pulse the butter, flour, ginger and sugar until it resembles coarse ground almonds.
sprinkle this all over the tart and fill in gaps as well. dot very lightly with a little extra butter. this is not necessary but adds extra colour to the topping.
bake 165c fan bake for at least 35 mins or until crumble is golden and fruit is slightly bubbling through.
note: we used four individual 8cm tartlet pans, they were baked at 165c fan bake for 17-20mins.

It makes me cry to think of people paying $60 for feijoas! here in Hakwes Bay i watch them rot on the ground at some places and we have huge juicy feijoas that we can't even give away! i have frozen some but i'm the only one who eats them

I will be trying out some of these recipes though so i can take things to friends and family using my feijoas to cheer up their day.

What an unhelpful comment - and great reply.

What else would a recipe thread be for but to share recipe snad ideas.

max, have y ou thought of putting them at the gate for free. a man down my street does that. he wont take any money, so now and then i take him a couple of muffins with feijoas in. Love those big fat juicy ones from the supermarket. guess they are a *special* breed, compared to ones in backyards, that maybe have been there for 30yr plus.

Try making a Feijoa Crumble using an Apple Crumble recipeand add a teaspoon ofginger powder to the crust mix -worksreally nicely with a blob of ice cream on top. A great way to use up thefeijoa flood - kids love it too. You can also addsome apples to your feijoas if you want.

I've also often wonder if we pronounce feijoa correctly. As they come from South America, is the 'j' pronounced as an 'h' there - just wondering!Anyone know!

And atip if youwant bigger feijoas next year. Wehad awhole hedge of them in One Tree Hill. One year i decided the trees were encroaching too far onto our property,so i attacked them and pruned one side right back. The next year our feijoas werethree timesasbig. So from that year onIpruned an alternate side of thefeijoa hedge each winter - resulting inan annual supply of whoppers.

I make a delicious Feijoa chicken curry. Don't have the recipe handy but I found it by google and have made it many times. I also make a Feijoa paste to eat with cheese. That takes 3 hours of stirring but is worth the effort. Google that too .sorry would type it out if I had it handy
