I collected some chestnuts in the park the other day and remembered that they can be roasted? has anyone done this and how can I give it a go?

in the oven with them, after cutting a cross in each top. About half hour at 180 degree. If you poke a needle through the cross and they are soft like boiled potatoes. then they are done. peel while very very hot, it gets harder as they cool down.
Unless you have a chestnut roaster over the open fire- nice for ambiance.

If you google 'how to roast chestnuts' there are several websites with this info.

Just be sure that they are chestnuts and not horse chestnuts...they look pretty much the same. From a park, they could be horse chestnuts.

Eating chestnuts have a kind of pointy top on the nut.
