This was my grandmother's recipe that I still make evry year. 1 kg cooked diced beetroot, 1.5 kg skinned tomatoes, 500 grms sugar, 750 grms finely chopped onions, 750 mls vinegar, 3 teasp common salt, Pinch cayenne pepper, Sml quantity cornflour Mix ingredients together, reserving 150 mls vinegar.Boil for approximately 1 ½ hours.Mix a small quantity of cornflour with the reserved vinegar and add to boiling mixture.Boil and stir well.

malt vinegar is made from malted grain, it has a very distinct flavor white vinegar has been distilled and refined into a fairly pure substance, other than sour, doesn't have much taste

Beetroot Chutney (Aunt Daisy) 3lb beetroot 1& 1/2lb apples 2 onions tsp salt 1pt vinegar 1/2tsp ground ginger 1/2lb sugar juice of 1 lemon Cook beetroot in salted water 1 hour. Cut beetroot & apples into dices, mince onion. Mix apples, onions & all ingredients except beetroot. Boil 20 mins Add beetroot, boil further 15 mins. Seal while hot .
