re post 366 Sandhu's products Thought Id ring them and just find out for sure if their products were gluten free or not as they dont have "Gluten Free" on them. The meals with pasta in are definately not GF. They dont claim their meals are gluten free just incase they use an ingredient in them that does have gluten in it.The lady I spoke to said they do have a lot of dairy in them. But good news: she assured me the sauces are gluten free :)

melford, Mar 25, 5:07am
The products I suggested are served with rice not pasta and we have no ill effects here

herika, Mar 25, 7:05pm
Thats good that you havent had any ill effects melford. I think these products (not the sauces) could be a problem because they arent necessarily gluten free because sometimes they may use ingredients that have gluten in them. If they did claim that they were gluten free or had Gluten Free on the packaging we would know for sure they would be safe to eat. The lady said the reason they dont put gluten free on them is because if they change any of the ingredients and use something with gluten in they would be liable. :)

Herika I use a lot of things that don't specify their gluten free status. I use them because they are cheaper, and they don't bother me, (I am quite sensitive to gluten)When someone puts gluten free on a product, that in itself costs the company money, and there is continual testing, therefore the costs of the product skyrockets to a horrendous price for us. I feel labelling laws in NZ are good, and I agree some companies might be a bit lax, but Herika, if we find one such company we have every right to complain to them and of course complain to the standards authorities. I am not grumpy I'm just saying what I do for myself, and it works. Cathy

On top of this I have had problems with food that has been labelled as gluten free. As I have a couple of other intolerances, it is hard to say what the problem is, but more than likely it will be soy, which is in everything! But this thread is about gluten free things, so I won't complain about it. Cathy

Hi cathy yes, I have complained to companies before. They can be very lax about whether or not something of theirs has gluten in or not. For instance if you ring Hansells they will tell you yes, their Vanilla Essence is gluten free. But if you continue to question them (Im quite pedantic at times, as everyone must know by now! lol)then they eventually told me:"we cant be 100% sure it is gluten free because of the alcohol base used in it" (its imported)and "we are at the mercy of the manufacturers"! Just as well for me I dont believe everything Im told! I cant understand how anyone claiming to be associated with the Coeliac Society (not you Cathy) can advertise a product here and say ".As far as I can tell they are gluten free" (post 366) I just find that so unresponsible.Im also the same as you in that there are some gluten free products that I cant have too, because of a certain ingredient in them - for me its vege gums mainly.

Passage to India Vindaloo Simmer Sauce has Gluten Free on the packet.I cant have it because it has vege gums in it (cause diarrhoea for me). But others may be okay with it, heres the rest of the ingredients: water, onion, sunflower oil, tomato paste, distilled vinegar (that can affect some people)herbs & spices, garlic, ginger, salt, brown sugar, paprika & paprika extract, citric acid, vege gums (Guar, Xanthan)and corn starch. There is an 0800 number on the packet along with their website: www.passagefoods.com for anyone who would like to check out their products a bit further :)

Pitango free range Thai Chicken Curry has gluten, dairy and GE free on it. Lists all the ingredients and has a guarantee on the packet too. They do say the ingredients are made in NZ from local and imported ingredients though.Pataks Butter Chicken Paste has gluten free on the packet. It lists all the ingredients and also says made from local and imported ingredients. They also have a guarantee and contact details.Hey, Cathy - the Pitango one has soy in it but the others dont, so you may like to try them :)

Any suggestions for using up bananas! I have only got rice flour and maize cornflour in the pantry, no budget for any other GF flours this week. Any suggestions! I thought about trying to make a banana sponge, not sure if the bananas would be too heavy.
