What would I boil the couscous in to give it a brown colour (bit like Soya sauce) and flavour!

uli, Jan 2, 4:57am
You answered it yourselves - soy sauce and water.

I bought some pearl cous cous and googled the address on the packet. They browned the pearl cous cous in oil first then added the water/stock etc to cook it in.
I made a salad ~was very yummy!

I wouldn't buy or eat anything Israeli while they continue to grow their produce on occupied (stolen) land.

Where is the best place to buy?

holly-rocks, Jan 6, 2:15am
I buy mine from the bulk bins at New World.

holly-rocks, are you sure that what you buy from the bulk bins at New World is Israeli couscous?Israeli couscous is not the instant variety that doesn't really require any cooking.
The Israeli couscous 'pearls' are much bigger and definitely require cooking - have a look at the picture at:-

I got israeli couscous at new world a while ago, they didn't actually have the "normal" sort.
It was annoying, and I won't get it again, took ages to cook, and because it was pearls not "chopped" it felt slimey in my mouth, kind of like half sized tapioca, and it didn't seem to take up other flavours very well at all.

lol Yes I'm sure. I have a friend from Israel and she cooks for us all the time.... so lucky :D

I went to a friends and had a lovely salad and when I asked about the type of cous cous she said it was "Israeli". So I went and bought a bag at Mediterranean Foods ($8 for 1kg). It says on the back of the bag to boil it for 5 mins, then rinse and eat. I have never cooked cous cous before and have been meaning to make a salad but ...... I will do it this weekend!

Couscous is milled wheat.
Israeli couscous is made from flour and water and is basically a pearl shaped pasta.

Apples grow on apple trees.
Pine cones grow on pine trees.
Pineapples grow where?

Bromeliads, of course.Anyway, the bulk bins at my NW carry both. I toast the couscous first in a dry medium-hot skillet, add a chopped onion for about the last minute, while the couscous is smelling toasted but not burnt. Then I'll add some stock, s&p, turmeric, cumin if I feel like it, put a lid on the pan, turn the heat down to low & simmer for a few minutes, then turn off the burner & let it coast on the ambient heat while it stands for about 10 minutes or so.

I bought the last pack from Moore Wilson. Having tried ordinary couscous and Israeli, I much prefer the taste and texture of the ordinary and I also found that it soaked up sauces whereas the Israeli tended not to.

I get mine from the Mediterranean Food Warehouse. It makes a delicious salad cooked and cooled and served with a tin of 4 bean mix, some olives, a couple of hard boiled eggs and some chopped sun-dried tomatoes, all in a balsamic dressing. Sometimes we add a tin of tuna or some extra fresh veg like asparagus of courgette. It's a great complete meal and the kids love it.

Simplifood is good in Blenheim.I've browned it in oil and added stock and lemon juice, then just a knob of butter and scof it.
