HUMMUS QUESTION....

korbo, Jan 3, 12:20am
I really like hummus, and am the only one in house that does.
Just opened a pottle, and thought I's read the info.
It says keep refridgerated(of course).....and then....consume within 4 days.
I cant eat a whole pottle in 4 days, what happens to it, or me after that time.
Anyone know, or does anyone just keep eating it.....

Mine lasts up to two weeks. You should make your own, easy and lasts longer.

ribzuba, Jan 3, 2:04am
it should last for ages...BUT you can also freeze it

mieshammie, Jan 3, 2:15am
If you freeze it sometimes it goes watery when defrosted. It generally keeps longer than it says on the tub, but wouldn't keep it longer than a week in the fridge.Any leftovers I add to gravies, soups or stews.

"what happens to it, or me after that time" - it goes off & if you eat it you may get a funny tummy however I agree with others that it will probably last longer than 4 days. It will smell bad when it's gone off.

It will last longer than 4 days, I can eat a whole pottle in one sitting:)

motorbo, Jan 3, 3:22am
they only say that to cover their arse, it will be fine ive eaten half and then left the rest for over a week and eaten the rest, as its only me i dont make my own anymore and there is a brand i adore so i buy that one!!

Hi korbo. Here is Dr Bernstein's wisdom on legumes. Please feel free to ignore both his wisdom and this post:

This is listed in his No-No's In A Nutshell:

".Beans: chilli beans, chickpeas, lima beans, lentils, sweet peas, etc (green beans snow peas and bell and chilli peppers, which are mostly cellulose, are okay, as are very limited amounts of many soybean products.)

Fruit and Juices
.All fruits except avocadoes
.All juices including tomato and vegetable juices - except for some people in a small Bloody Mary."

So for a diabetic, such as yourself, hummus, which is mainly chickpeas and some lemon juice, should definitely be off the menu.

Hey buzzy, you were in korbo's pavlova thread pointing out she shouldn't be eating that either.

What's up with that ?

korbo, Jan 3, 9:13am
eastie, thank you for the comment. My specialist - who - I might add... is the top diabetic one in HB, quoted to eat all I like, but in small quanties and not on a regular basis, as in eating pav etc.
Today, I have not had anything sweet to eat, just the way it has been today...
all communications I have had with medical people regarding my diabeties, say everything in MODERATION and thats what i do....
Mine mainly went out of control due to a 5week stint in a coma, and 4 mths in rehab, due to a medical hiccup..just has taken a while to come to insulin.
So thereyou have it, but being on insulin(see my other thread on insulin question in health) I just needed some info.
thanks again

just outta interest, i have checked the ingredients on the Pam's
sundried tomato hummus I have....
per average serve..
sugar..<1g
carbs...2.2g
protien...1.6g
fat...3.0g
I am pretty aware of what is what, but interested now to see what peeps can tell me about this hummus....

ps. it is so yummy, could eat the whole pottle in one sitting with a packet of cracker bis.....lol..lol

ladeda, Jan 3, 9:26pm
LOLOLOL, thanks, you've made my day.

davidt4, Jan 3, 10:03pm
The figures "per average serve" are not meaningful unless the "average serve" is quantified.Food manufacturers are notorious for manipulating unwary buyers by setting an "average serve" as something tiny like a teaspoonful, when in real life people would eat half a cupful.

Figures per 100g are more useful as you can then compare various brands fairly.

I'm sorry korbo if my concern for your future health is misplaced. I mean no nastiness but boy I certainly get it back in spades from you, along with a number of your supporters.

At the time when I posted in your pavolva thread, I genuinely thought you were making it, not to eat yourself, but because you wanted to make up your mother's recipe. I often make food that I wouldn't eat myself. I apologise for ever thinking you being careful and cautious careful about controlling your blood sugars and trying to prevent spikes.

As well you should. We should all cherish the life we have on this planet. I do mine and I have had some extensive help from qualified people to ensure that I am fit and healthy enough to cherish my time. Along the way I have picked up a huge amount of nutritional knowledge and I feel that I can sometimes share the wisdom of others, better qualified than myself, with others who I think may benefit.

Once again, in you I was sorely mistaken. You feel that because I have never suffered, as you have and do, that I should be jeered at and dismissed as a raving lunatic and also called derogatrory names.

So I hope you do cherish you life, as I cherish mine.
