Anyone think the strawberries are awful this year?

kabbo, Dec 28, 11:11pm
same. dunno why - but I seem to always be the one who has to get the strawberries for xmas day! same as you VK, bought several chips from several shops. the ones I bought on the 23rd were quite manky by the next morning and even worse by xmas morning grrr, despite being kept in the fridge.

next year bags not to do the strawberries for xmas day hehe.

Your hubby "brawt" a "chip" home!
Now how is HE settling in I wonder!

uli, Dec 28, 11:36pm
Yeah lots is my fault entirely - especially the myths of "calories in versus calories out" or even the soy toxicity - and of course all the low carb problems . WHY can't we eat grains AND be healthy!

lizab, Dec 29, 12:01am
Just another usual post from uli . yawn!

bedazzledjewels, Dec 29, 12:02am
But she's correct - the weather has heaps to do with the quality of the fruit and it was awful in Auckland last week - too much rain and humidity combined.

prawn_whiskas, Dec 29, 12:18am
Exactly

Did everyone miss the clip on the news on . it would have been the 22/23rd of this month. they interviewed a strawb farmer and he explained why the quality AND quantity would be down this year leading to higher prices and under ripe fruit in the packs, along with A LOT of waste on their behalf. This particular farmer was having to throw about 40% of his crop to the pig bins due to the rain and humidity spoiling the fruit.

Just dug up all my home grown strawberry plants. They produced 'wild' like strawberries this year.We had a couple of servings off them.Very disappointing!:(

morticia, Dec 29, 1:04am
Not hard to figure out that the wet weather has had a major impact on harvest and availability this month. This won't be the only major grower with these issues.

I know. I know. If it weren't for you, soy just wouldn't be, and would never have been, a problem. Everyone would have just been able to go on eating and eating the stuff and subsequent health problems could have been blamed entirely on saturated fat.

Now, when people eat lots of soy lecithin laced foods, drink soy milk and eat processed breads and baked goods made with soy they have you to blame when things start to go horribly wrong because it was you who made soy unhealthy.

buzzy110, Dec 29, 2:34am
And what is more, it is all your fault that bagged salad greens go slimy. If you hadn't suggested that the growing and storing methods were less than ideal, those items would be good to eat, all the time.

rss9, Dec 29, 3:45am
.YES.

elliehen, Dec 29, 9:28am
.which is exactly why some people are superb teachers and other people switch their students right off!

elliehen, Dec 29, 10:20am
The ones in my neighbour's are too ;)

millenium1, Dec 29, 6:07pm
We West Aucklanders have some of the best strawberry growers around. If you are ever in Swanson Rd, stop and get some from Sokol's, they have simply the best! They even fly theirs over to Buckingham Palace, read an article in the Western Leader about it a few years ago! They are 6 chips for $5. Can't beat that!

crails, Dec 30, 5:17am
Those Kumeu strawberries are the best I've ever eaten

obviousas, Jan 2, 10:06am
They should had been keep in refrigeration. If they were picked before it got warmer and refrigerated there won't be a thread for this. I think the wet weather just before Christmas didn't help

prawn_whiskas, Jan 2, 7:03pm
It didn't matter for some growers. the fruit was shagged on the plant, they had to pick the best of what was there.Man I must have been the only one who saw the TV interview.

cookessentials, Jan 2, 7:18pm
yeah, like, does it matter! chip, punnet, what ever.

lythande1, Jan 2, 8:44pm
Yes, I go there. Notice they went to $1.49 each at Xmas before going back to $5 for 6! greed.
Humidity does have a lot to do with it, I found I had to keep them in the fridge if I wanted them to last more than 2 days max. Same with the bread - husband got 1/2 loaf out, 2 1/2 days later it was white with mould.

nfh1, Jan 2, 8:46pm
I had never heard of chips before - well not as something to put fruit in.

Is a chip supposed to have a certain weight in or just anything goes!

ibcreative, Jan 2, 10:36pm
Thanks nfh1. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

And cooksessentials, it doesn't matter at all. I was just interested as I'd never heard them called that before. I wish I hadn't mentioned it now.

nfh1, Jan 3, 2:14am
Don't be, it is interesting.I wonder how the name came about!

uli, Jan 3, 2:21am
Especially as "chip" is normally an electronic term. mostly used as a type of "integrated circuit chip carrier" :)

prawn_whiskas, Jan 3, 2:36am
Why! then we wouldn't have had the convo and all learned something new.Life's about learning, asking questions gets you there, don't close off to learning.

nfh1, Jan 3, 2:39am
This is going to say a lot about me as my first thought when someone mentions 'chips' is

French Fries!
