Anyone think the strawberries are awful this year?

a chip of strawberries, sorry.

lizab, Dec 28, 12:01am
Just another usual post from uli ... yawn!

bedazzledjewels, Dec 28, 12:02am
But she's correct - the weather has heaps to do with the quality of the fruit and it was awful in Auckland last week - too much rain and humidity combined.

prawn_whiskas, Dec 28, 12:18am
Exactly

Did everyone miss the clip on the news on .. it would have been the 22/23rd of this month.. they interviewed a strawb farmer and he explained why the quality AND quantity would be down this year leading to higher prices and under ripe fruit in the packs, along with A LOT of waste on their behalf. This particular farmer was having to throw about 40% of his crop to the pig bins due to the rain and humidity spoiling the fruit.

Absolutely right.

Often it is not what you say but how you say which makes people consider the point.

Just dug up all my home grown strawberry plants. They produced 'wild' like strawberries this year.We had a couple of servings off them.Very disappointing!:(

morticia, Dec 28, 1:04am
Not hard to figure out that the wet weather has had a major impact on harvest and availability this month. This won't be the only major grower with these issues.

I know. I know. If it weren't for you, soy just wouldn't be, and would never have been, a problem. Everyone would have just been able to go on eating and eating the stuff and subsequent health problems could have been blamed entirely on saturated fat.

Now, when people eat lots of soy lecithin laced foods, drink soy milk and eat processed breads and baked goods made with soy they have you to blame when things start to go horribly wrong because it was you who made soy unhealthy.

buzzy110, Dec 28, 2:34am
And what is more, it is all your fault that bagged salad greens go slimy. If you hadn't suggested that the growing and storing methods were less than ideal, those items would be good to eat, all the time.

.....YES........

Our corner store has been selling chips of strawberries, 3 for $7.00, hubby was getting them everyday and they were yummy. One weekend he had them for 6 for $7 (I think it was), boy we made pigs of ourselves. We havent had them as cheap or nice as this year. Not sure where he was getting them from, in Auckland somewhere.

fruitluva2, Dec 28, 5:04am
Mmmm I want to go and search for some

gillian111, Dec 28, 5:37am
Grew our own this year. Absolutely delicious and will continue to do so each year now.
Some plants were 2nd year and others I got from a friend and were enormous and juicy. (Not sure what variety they were though).

The Wairarapa strawberries are just beautiful as usual. We have our own, but not enough for what we need so our local "Little Red Barn" is keeping us very happy.

...which is exactly why some people are superb teachers and other people switch their students right off!

willow123, Dec 28, 10:07am
The ones in our garden are scrumptious!

elliehen, Dec 28, 10:20am
The ones in my neighbour's are too ;)

millenium1, Dec 28, 6:07pm
We West Aucklanders have some of the best strawberry growers around. If you are ever in Swanson Rd, stop and get some from Sokol's, they have simply the best! They even fly theirs over to Buckingham Palace, read an article in the Western Leader about it a few years ago! They are 6 chips for $5. Can't beat that!

crails, Dec 29, 5:17am
Those Kumeu strawberries are the best I've ever eaten

heidsguy, Jan 2, 5:56am
Yeah they are horrible (well supermarket ones are). The best I've tasted are from Mangere Bridge in Auckland.THey do yummy milkshakes made out of real strawberries too

firefly001, Jan 2, 6:27am
what is this chip? - haven't you's guys heard of punnets...

elliehen, Jan 2, 6:29am
'Brawt' as a phonetic (or text) representation of 'brought' makes a whole lot of sense to those interested in spelling reform.

In German 'bracht' or 'gebracht' the consonants are sounded, but English ditched them at the same time as they ditched the 'gh' in 'sight' and 'bright' etc

elliehen, Jan 2, 6:31am
Mainlanders have got it sussed firefly001 ;)

buzzy110, Jan 2, 6:41am
Second that heidsguy. Now, since the sun has been shining for all daylight hours their strawberries are pure delight. They also do a fantastic frozen strawberry ice cream as well and the gardens are full of customers from morning till night.

ibcreative, Jan 2, 6:45am
I can't say I'd ever heard/seen them called chips until this thread. Is it a North Island thing?
