I bought a 2nd hand one with no instructions. I cooked Ratio 1cup rice to 3 cups of water had to add another cup of water. The mess it had bubbled all over spitting (ther was a little hole in the lid (twas meant to be there. Looks to me that I have my ratio wrong. Help I don't want to be cleaning up all day .

yikes, way too much water you're using there!
1 cup of uncooked rice should have 1.25 cups of water 2 cups uncooked = 2 cups water 3 cups uncooked = 3 cups water
Brown rice to water ratio requires more water - 1:1.25, 3:4.5, 4:6
