VEGAN BAKING

Yes. It is very funny. Here is something else funny I read in the paper the other day. Apparently "one third of vegetarians eat meat when they get drunk".

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2015/10/07/one-third-vegetarians-eat-meat-when-get-drunk/

I can't say I did that when I thought I was a vegetarian but I used to have a huge number of justifications for eating fish. Now, looking back, I can see that I wasn't a vegetarian at all, just someone who chose to only eat fish and seafood. I couldn't give those up because what is life without oysters, scallops and really fresh fish?

Hilarious.

Just something interesting. There is a vegan columnist in the Herald's Bite magazine (Monday). He gives some absolutely fabulous vegan recipes. I have been tempted to try some and reckon that I should start doing so.

I don't think my posts are aggressive, but are critical of those who down cry any who have other beliefs. I read your post as promoting the book and an anti-vegan lifestyle. Perhaps because you gave a synopsis of the book, said how terrible a vegan lifestyle is and said where we could buy it.To me, and I'm sure to many others, that is promotion.

Nor do I appreciate being told what to do by an anonymous member.

Anyone who has visited the Buddhist Monastery in Stokes Valley, seen the very fit and healthy members, including some rather elderly, working long and hard hours will be in no doubt that a vegan lifestyle suits some.

Vegetarian is nothing like a vegan though is it, vegetarian is a health choice whereas vegan is an ethics choice in general. Most vegans are misguided in my opinion and if you live closely in their world you find that indeed when the guard is down they just have to know what bacon tastes like (their humanity peeps through).

Since we have one in Whangarei also I know exactly what those people eat :) and it is certainly very far removed from vegan.

Of course it depends if it is a Tibetian Buddhist monastry or an Indian one LOL

Also you seem to think that ALL energy comes from food - if you meditate every day from 4am onwards then you have other access to energy - food is very secondary then. They live off "prana" not rice and pickles.

kay141, Nov 15, 3:09am
I'm amazed that you know exactly what I think. How do you do that?

FYI

http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/3538/1/Energy-How-Does-My-Body-Get-It-And-How-Does-It-Use-It.html Also.
"Mental Energy
Your brain needs a constant supply of energy to continuously maintain, support and protect your life. Mental activities, such as work, hobbies, reading, studying, homework, doing crossword puzzles, learning a new language, any mentally challenging endeavor, including daydreaming, requires energy. According to the Franklin Institute, brain cells require double the amount of energy needed by other cells. Worry and stress drain mental and physical energy. Problems with finances, employment, school, health, relationships, family and friends can increase susceptibility to illness, according to Purdue University Student Health Center."

It's sad. I came into this thread as I am struggling to stick to a vegan diet, hoping for a little light in something I find difficult. Instead a whole bunch of negativity. If you don't agree with something why bother posting? There are many reasons for choosing to restrict your diet in one way or another. For me it is a chronic life threatening illness for which I have been advised (by the mainstream medical specialist at the hospital) to avoid animal proteins and fats. I wont ever know if it works or not except I might not get as sick as I otherwise would. It is not the ONLY change I have made in the hope of avoiding a really awful future but it is the change with the least side effects for me personally. It is not a choice I made to be vegan but a choice I made to try and remain as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Thanks for the brownie recipe. I will try that. I have made the fruit cake in the past and for a person having to live without butter, butter substitutes, eggs, milk etc, it fills a gap pretty nicely.

I know you are good at quoting daarhn - however this above does explain nothing at all.

If you see 80 year olds that eat nothing but white rice and pickled vegs and only twice a day do their morning prayers at 4am with 100 times full length onto the floor face down and then up again to standing you DO wonder where they get the energy to do that - don't you? . Well at least I DO!

NOT from the food I suspect. I would be ill if I ate that for a few months - yet they seem to be able to do it for decades.

So where does that energy come from?

uli, Nov 15, 4:23am
I am sorry if you feel it is negative to say that vegans have to give up their vegan diet at some stage because they get ill if they such a restrictive diet for decades. The book I quoted is actually used by my own GP now.

I am also sorry that you feel that by going vegan because your doctor says so you are having a problem. I am all for a good diet. However I must admit that a "good diet" in my eyes wouldn't include brownies or any cakes at all.

I feel for you that a lot of your "comfort foods" might now be off limits - however if your future health is at stake it might pay to really investigate yourself what might help it getting better, rather than just listen to one or two "mainstream" specialists.

Now without knowing WHY you want to go vegan and WHY your doctor thinks that is beneficial there is no way that I am going to comment further.

If you want to have some advice why not post what that problem is that you are facing and why your doctor recommends to go vegan in the "health and beauty" part of this message board. There are lots of people who might help you. This part ("recipes") is more for everyday cooking.

I am sure you will have more help over there.
Good luck!

toffeey, Nov 15, 4:29am
I've got all the expert help I need thanks. From real experts not message boards. I came here looking for recipes not judgement. Good luck yourself.

Toffeey, have a look at the Mouthwatering Vegan site I gave the link to in post# 7, she has some great recipes on there. We are not vegan but do try to cut down on animal protein and fats and enjoy both vegan and vegetarian meals most days. Another great site that I use a lot is Cooking with plants, she does videos of her recipes too. http://cookingwithplants.com/
Hope this helps

nauru, Nov 15, 8:11am
It's for any type of cooking be it every day or otherwise, don't be so negative.

frances1266, Nov 15, 6:31pm
I also really like the Cooking with Plants video clips. Anyone going vegan for health reasons would find Dr John McDougall's site interesting. He has been a vegan doctor for over 40 years and has heaps of free information, interviews and hundreds of healthy recipes on his site. Also there are many of his lectures on utube. He also has many video clips showing people who have recovered from serious health issues.

Didn't think it is negative to suggest asking in the "health" section for specific foods or recipes for specific health problems? Lots of people have threads over there for that reason.

However i guess we gave lots of links and I listed vegan threads right here on recipes - so I hope that will help.

I managed to find this recipe - i made them as individual pudding sizes, they turned out so light and fluffy. I also added some vegan choc chips. Might even play around with it and soak some chopped dates in black tea, drain and add these to give extra fudgey texture or raisins.

Blow. I see that he isn't featured in this weeks Bite, after being there all year. My timing is obviously off with this piece of advice.

Here is the link to his vegan recipes instead:
