Mother in law always made the cheats version, use purchased puff pastry to line the bottom of the patty pan tray, dollop of purchased red jam then fill with purchased packet cake mix batter( white type cake) decorate with scraps from pastry.Grandmother always made the Edmond's version from scratch. Both equally delicious.

The pastry decoration on the top is traditionally a loop - rather like the Breast Cancer ribbon.
