Old Fashioned Puddings

What was your most favourite pudding from when you were a kid? We used to have Apple Roly Poly, where the sliced apples were wrapped into scroll shapes in scone mix with a lovely sticky syrup over them and baked. Sooo nice. What is yours? Am cooking for an older group of people and would love some ideas. TIA

Mum used to do a chocolate pudding with jam underneath and meringue on the top - usually with custard.

These from the 1940s and 50s:Chocolate blancmange. Ginger junket. Apple dumplings, stuffed baked apples, and apple fritters. Lemon sago. Lemon self-saucing sponge. Spotted Dick & custard. Steamed pud with butterscotch sauce. Jam rolypoly. Trifle. Pancakes with lemon. Baked custard.

That being said, we only had desserts at the weekend - if we wanted something sweet after dinner on school nights, we were directed to the fruit bowl.

My mum's rice pudding - it was always a bit hit and miss as she didn't really follow a recipe but when it was thick and creamy it was delicious.

And her bread pudding too (not bread and butter pudding) so long as there was no burnt fruit on my bit - especially with custard.

If you search on TM for a 1950s-1960s New Zealand community cookbook, where recipes are submittedby home cooks, they're all in there :)Not all the old cookbooks sell at 'collectable' prices.
