Yes I did, and always have they are softer, If the pie apples have hard bits on them cut them off, I found some in a tin the other day.

This was great. Thanks basange. Needed some comfort food and thought this would fit the bill. Wasn't sure if it was meant to go back in the oven after the sauce went on. Decided to cook it for 25, poured the sauce over and put it back in for the last 10 which seemed to work. Didn't have any apples so used a can of peaches and added some nutmeg. It was pretty good too. Also only had fresh cream so added in some milk powder. Used 1/2 c sugar in the sauce but would only use 1/2 in the cake too next time. Think a can of condensed milk and no added sugar would work well.
