Bread Improver?

My breadmaker says in NZ we don't need bread improver - I'm thinking it must be in our yeast. But I was reading some recipe threads (a few weeks back) and they mention using improver so I asked at countdown and they don't seem to stock it.Just wondered if it would make grain bread not so heavy.(I buy the bread mix)I find it yummy when I toast but not so good as bread.I

It is already in some of the brands in the jars, it will state it on the label. You can still by plain yeast or one with an improver, just need to read the packets carefully.

It wont make a difference to your grain bread, its the grains and courser grind of flour that make it denser. All Improver is, is food and enzymes for the yeast to eat and 'work better'.

Need! no, all you need is water, yeast, flour.

I seem to remember someone telling me just to crush a Vitamin C tablet and add it as 'improver'.Did it til the bottle ran out, and didn't really notice a big difference in the bread.
