LOL

I'm honestly gobsmacked to learn some people take offence to "Enjoy".

I had no idea...

smileeah, Jul 24, 2:36am
I'm curious...is this a phenomenon that perhaps people 'take on' for themselves when they hear others thoughts on the subject and subsequently think more about it?
Or is it an innate thing?

elliehen, Jul 24, 2:46am
I think any phrase that is tossed off carelessly and appears to not be a genuine communication with another person can cause offence to some.

It's similar to when a checkout operator says, 'How was your day?' but then doesn't really want, or have time for, a run down ;)

These phrases are social lubricants, but some people would rather not have their interactions lubricated!

smileeah, Jul 24, 2:57am
lol Ok I get ya. :) It's more the intention/meaning behind the word than the word itself.

charlieb2, Jul 24, 3:02am
I agree with you elliehen.. but feel sorry for the checkout person/waiter or whatever who can then be accused of unfriendly or sullen service because they have not tried to interact with the customer...

I think the intent, 99% of the time, when a waitperson says 'enjoy' is well meant and given genuinely....

jezabell, Jul 24, 3:02am
I say "Have a great day" heaps and I mean it as I would not wish a sh..tty day on anyone unless I really disliked them.
Sometimes as in this Saturday at work i said "have a great weekend ladies" two a couple of woman browsing.
What should I say? Hay ladies are you leaving now without buying something? well what a couple of tight old b...ches? Yeah right, common courtesy costs nothing.

smileeah, Jul 24, 3:10am
I agree.
Each to their own though. I guess it is a bit like fingernails on a chalkboard - some people just can't stand it and other people aren't bothered by it in the slightest.

charlieb2, Jul 24, 3:24am
Good on you... and yes, exactly, what SHOULD you say instead... Thanks for walkiing into our shop and not buying anything!! lol

cookessentials, Jul 24, 3:25am
they dont even say enjoy your day, they just say "enjoy"

charlieb2, Jul 24, 3:26am
Personally, having worked in retail, I've said, 'enjoy your day' or 'have a great day' or similar.... but never without meaning it....I would imagine a waitperson is mostly the same.

Its not something that I would let ruin a meal out over.... but as you say smileeah. 'blackboard/nails' for some

kuaka, Jul 24, 3:27am
I would rather somebody said "enjoy" or bon appetit than say "I hope it chokes you" - what is the problem with being friendly even if it is on a superficial level.Better that than being on the receiving end of a sullen look or being ignored.

cookessentials, Jul 24, 3:28am
I am sure it is, but I dont not like it because of that, it just sounds awful...if they said enjoy your meal, I wouldnt mind. Its a bit like using the word "like" a number of times in a sentence...you hear young girls do it and it has been picked up from overseas programmes and just becomes a bad habit.

charlieb2, Jul 24, 3:29am
did you read my post (it WAS meant to be jokey, but obviously not) in context with davidt's post....?

charlieb2, Jul 24, 3:39am
thanks for the thread simber.. interesting comments

elliehen, Jul 24, 3:47am
Enjoy ;)

somejimguy, Jul 24, 3:55am
Bon = good, appetit = appetite? to eat?

Every translation you could think of here.

And if you told me to "enjoy" my meal I'd slam the plate on the ground and storm off in disgust. Just kidding.
I don't know why anyone would be offended by that, unless it was something disgusting and the chef was being sarcastic.

charlieb2, Jul 24, 3:56am
why thank you elliehen, I have. Every mouthful

simber1, Jul 24, 3:42pm

We need to be able to encourage our young people to practise small talk with adults.... whats wrong with saying 'hows your day?' or 'enjoy', i mean at least they are trying! What would you suggest they say?

micky_1, Jul 24, 4:05pm
I wascheck out chick moons ago and I did say how's your day been and have a nice day and I DID mean it every time.

cookessentials, Dec 1, 10:49am
