ummm, bag of spuds, peeler, knife, pot, water, boil for 20 mins till cooked, drain, mash with a masher. tada - mashed potatoes.

greerg, May 11, 6:14pm
I've frozen mashed potato too when I've overcooked.I don't think it's as good as freshly cooked but fine for when you're in a hurry.I'm not a convenience food user but I sometimes think life with three kids and a job might have been easier if I had relaxed that philosophy a bit.Different people make different choices and a game with the kids may well be better for them than knowing their mother has religiously cooked and mashed their potatoes when she got home exhausted from work.

cut the spuds fairly small, they don't even need 20 minutes to cook and they mash a lot easier too.Mind you, I always mash them, but then get hubby to whip them with a fork, and he gets them much fluffier than I can, 'cos he's got much bigger stronger hands and arms.

So how is placing a potato in a pot, then mashing it once boiled harder than placing a packet in a microwave then mashing once cooked!

Unbelievable waste of money.

Another week! Try another 6 months.

nfh1, May 11, 8:47pm
You don't have to peel a packet.Thee is no waste either.

kay - I hadn't thought of that aspect of it.Hopefully the day won't come when I have trouble using my hands.

rubyjane11, May 11, 10:36pm
some posters here need to stop and take a breath.god forbid they may one day be elderly and have trouble holding things or havethe strength to simply mash something.

For some reason the teenagers love to snack on the dried potato mix that you just add boiling water to. I tried it once and thought it tasted artificial, then my daughter gave me some with KFC gravy and I loved it.

The product is not for me, but how much worse could it be than a pottle of fries from the chippies!

Well said.We mainly use frozen as there is no waste -if you have a busy week and are out and not cooking much you don't end up having to throw them out.

Each to their own!But obviously you are one of those righteous old biddys who does everything correct! You don't know a person's circumstances but consider it an unbelievable waste of money. What a know all who knows nothing!Old bag!

I must try to find these. My children (21 months old) love onions.I hate them. There's no way I am buying a whole onion just for most of it to go rotten before it can be eaten, but it would be good for them to have onion every now and then in stews etc.

I've tried those instant mashed potatoes out of the freezer department (not sure what brand).Let me tell you, they are delicious.But..... not something I would use as I prefer to go as natural as possible in this day and age we get enough additives.Might be good for camping or something though.

And it started with this simple short sentence!!
anyone tried them? Just saw advertised

If I have any onion left over I dice it and freeze it.... no need to buy a bag from the supermarket just pop it in a snaplock sandwich bag and flatten its so its one layer, then when frozen you can crunch it up so they are seperate pieces, would imagine thats all you would be buying for alot more from the supermarket.Same with grated cheese I just buy the cheapest Edam and grate it into a tupperware container.. grated cheese when ever you need it.I hate waste and that includes money so I would never waste money on what I can easily do myself..

kay141, May 14, 10:09pm
You are lucky you can manage to grate cheese. I only buy tasty and have found they are all too soft to grate unless I leave them unwrapped for a while.
