Mashed potatoes freeze very well. I have frozen mashed potatoes, I heated them in the microwave, they came up as good as the day they went in the freezer. I think I did this because I had a bag of potatoes that were not keeping, rather than have them go to the worms, I thought I would try it. I regularly freeze mashed pumpkin, carrot and parsnip. I look on them as a prepared ready to eat vegetable. I would think it would be very handy for working mothers .uli.how nasty, some mothers have to work, then go home and do another days work, and then have one more little job to take care of before they can rest. I was lucky my husband did his fare share at home, some won't.

Small problem. The product in question is NOT "Instant mashed potato". It still requires mashing after cooking.

I nearly always cook more spud than we need, mash it, add the butter, milk & parsley (or what ever i feel like adding) then place what we don't need into large ice cubes trays.Once frozen i place into bags. It is sooo handy to have these in the freezer for the nights when I'm either too busy or too lazy to cook. You just take out as many blocks as you need and nuke them.

I wouldn't use them, but I guess they're no worse than the "frozen diced onions" which my supermarket stocks.

beebs, May 10, 7:25pm
i have used them (not that brand) on one of 'those' nights when i didnt have much time to get something on the table, i have no issue with it in that situation, and there is no waste with them.

I've frozen mashed potato too when I've overcooked.I don't think it's as good as freshly cooked but fine for when you're in a hurry.I'm not a convenience food user but I sometimes think life with three kids and a job might have been easier if I had relaxed that philosophy a bit.Different people make different choices and a game with the kids may well be better for them than knowing their mother has religiously cooked and mashed their potatoes when she got home exhausted from work.

redslapper, May 10, 11:22pm
it seems wrong to me as its really not hard to chuck them in a pot then mash them so no i wouldnt use them

kabbo, May 10, 11:33pm
ive used these instant frozen items, and while fresh is always best (i think), sometimes it comes down to time and convenience (which is what our world has become), i dont think it hurts once in a while.

Frozen diced onions are used by my friend for soups and stews in the winter. She has bad rheumatoid arthritis and a lot of chopping is not possible.

Instant mashed potato has its place for all of you who have downed this product. My father is 85, my mother has now become unable to cook, so easy meals are what keeps them in their own home.I work full-time and do my best to provide them with home cooked meals but on the days that they cook for themselves, instant mashed potato, a poached egg on top and some sausages with gravy, is quite within my father's grasp.

So how is placing a potato in a pot, then mashing it once boiled harder than placing a packet in a microwave then mashing once cooked?

Unbelievable waste of money.

enigma, May 11, 1:20am
Another week? Try another 6 months.

nfh1, May 11, 1:47am
You don't have to peel a packet.Thee is no waste either.

kay141, May 11, 1:48am
Handy to have in the freezer when you are 1hr by car from the neares shops.

_serendipity_, May 11, 2:12am
lol - studies have shown frozen veges to be better for you then the ones that sit on the supermarket shelf. Frozen veges are frozen straight after picking. "Fresh" veges go from farmer Brown, to supplier, to foodstuffs (or similar) then are shipped to your supermarket where they sit another week. Then you buy them and how soon do you eat them! I always choose frozen over "fresh" unless grown myself of course.

Your wallet would disagree

kuaka, May 11, 3:13am
kay - I hadn't thought of that aspect of it.Hopefully the day won't come when I have trouble using my hands.

kay141, May 11, 3:26am
A lot of people as they get older have trouble with the various forms of arthritis. Pre-chopped food like vegetables etc. can make life easier but very often more expensive. She buys the meat for her stews as diced steak and kidney, and already prepared veges. I buy gravy or shin beef , an ox kidney,, carrots and onions and get a lot more for the same money.

rubyjane11, May 11, 3:36am
some posters here need to stop and take a breath....god forbid they may one day be elderly and have trouble holding things or havethe strength to simply mash something..

nauru, May 11, 4:25am
Yes, I agree, people with arthritis would find it almost impossible to mash anything even with those specially designed utensils that on the market. Not sure how many serves are in the product but I guess that they would be ideal for anyone living on their own. I never use these convenient foods and much prefer to use fresh produce and make everything from scratch but there may come a time when I too will choose the convenient way.

nfh1, May 11, 4:55am
LOL - so it would!

Hey Pickles, this is very interesting, did you freeze them with or without the milk/cream and butter added!

For some reason the teenagers love to snack on the dried potato mix that you just add boiling water to. I tried it once and thought it tasted artificial, then my daughter gave me some with KFC gravy and I loved it.

The product is not for me, but how much worse could it be than a pottle of fries from the chippies?
