Greek souvlaki

What is the red powder they sprinkle on over the souvlaki? Cheers

I am wondering if it is sweet paprika? They don't go in for chilli much traditionally.

Sumac? A coarse dark red powder.

Sumac is not used in Greek cookery, however I personally think it would be really nice on souvlaki.

I think you will find that it is sometimes used in Greek cookery, have a look at the info in the spice list in the link below.

Whoops, well I am surprised at that. Thanks for the info. I don't ever remember having it in Greece but then maybe I wouldn't have known what it was. I was brought up with Greek food but southern Greek (there are regional differences) and there are many middle eastern influences in the food.
I am going in June for a visit and will keep my taste buds at the ready.
I always wonder whether Baklava and Tzatziki is actually Greek or Turkish and I suspect the latter. shh as long as I don't tell my rellies.
