Has anyone tried this, what does the vodka give to the tomato sauce?

'Penne alla Vodka'- adding the vodka to the tomato/cream sauce gives a tangy zingy flavor but all in all its a very plain dish really - one my favorite comfort foods :-)

Funnily enough, I just made penne alla bettola which is penne pasta in a tomato, vodka and cream sauce. Apparently according to Alton Brown, some of the flavours in tomatoes dissolve and are released with alcohol. It's my favourite pasta dish, so simple but extremely nice. 1/2 tsp chili flakes add a kick.
