There are several different types of buttercream - are you wanting to pipe big swirls or just spread a little on top? For big swirls I'd recommend a meringue-type buttercream, as it's fluffier and lighter, so not so sickly when you pipe a swirl on, but it is quite a bit harder to make and if you're just spreading the topping you can use the Edmonds mock cream recipe or similar (my variation of this is written up here, scroll down to the bottom: http://www.mrscake.co.nz/2010/05/baking-blitz-ginger-kisses.html ).
