I wish we had a wood burner now that I have read this thread!

raloki, Jul 21, 4:00am
I started just cooking things that I normally cook on the stove top on my cast iron woodburner, but because of the earlier thread tried a roast. I put everything into a roasting bag inside the roasting pan with the lid on. It was one of the nicest roasts I have ever done I think. When I want to make an oven type on top I just use my large square roasting dish with the lid on. I also fry things on the top, but have a cast iron frypan, otherwise I just use normal pots and pans.

you dont just have to use cast iron... . but it has to be nice heavy based pans and pots or things will burn.

raloki Was it a beef roast? and how long did you cook it for? I would love to try that.

raloki, Jul 21, 2:39pm
Hi Carterne. . No it was a stuffed chicken roast with veges. It took about two hours from memory. Sorry, I didn't really take definite note of the time. I made sure my heat was good and constant throughout - wasn't hard as I remember it was a cold day here that day. Hopefully someone else can help you with a beef roast.

38 - Bung it in a oven bag and keep some small - medium dry wood on the side to regulate the temp. Same goes for those who want to know about baking (the thing about the wood that is)

Great way... . of cooking. Made a chicken casserole on it last night and did the potatoes inside the fire. Washed the potato (no peeling) zapped in mocrowave until just cooked (don't forget to prick them all over though), wrap in tinfoil and put into the fireplace for about 5 to 10 minutes. Delicous with sour cream on top. AT the moment have a large pot of soup on the go. Might give the bread a try that juliewn did.

soups & stocks on the open fireplace Also put my smoke-box on the dying embers of the open fire before going to bed. Be tucking into smoked tuna fish, smoked farm made sausages and smoked eel for lunch.

thanks bomin for the great idea Next inorganic collection we may get donated someone's old BBQ frame for the fireplace. Would save loads of electricity on slow simmering home made stock.

Cooked my soup on the top of our woodburner yesterday. I just put it in a big stainless pot, and put it straight on the top of the woodburner. It simmered away very slowly all day. Didnt create any steam or even get close to bubbling over at all! I topped the water up 2-3 times, gave it a stir, and other than that it didnt need any attention.

cook on our firebox every night sausages, bacon, small steaks, pot roast for meats. Fish in foil. Steam veges and fry the cabbage and even put dumplings on top. Cook rice. We put a pot of water on and use it for dishes or even a cuppa.
The wetback heats the water, so it's win-win all round. Our winter power account is always cheaper than our summer one.

we had a power cut all day thursday... we cooked a casserole on our fire and i made an oven using an upturned stockpot and cooked some tandoori bread... it was great! Thanks for the inspiration. .

juliewn, Aug 2, 6:52am
Yum. . that sounds good. . hope your fridge was ok with the power cut. .

soup we quite often do soups on the fire. just chuck everything in the biggest pot you have and let it cook for up to 24 hrs. makes the most tasty meal.

Great thread! I've been cooking on our log burner too... . . anything really! Can't understand why they (regional council, government) want to get rid of them... was a life saver two years ago when we had 1 1/2 week power cut! Now we have a power shortage, not after all this rain I guess, but still keeps our power bill down! And it uses a renewable resource!
