why not beef stock cubes?

Because they will taint the lovely beefy flavour with an artificial taste.

I have no beef stock but I have everything else plus red wine and a can of tomatoes.Can anyone help out with an alternative to beef stock? TIA

Beef casserole To make up for the lack of beef stockmake sure to flour then brown the meat really really well in oil or butter before you add the liquids.Whatever you do don't use artificial stock (powder or cubes).

Thanks That's exactly what I did and it's in the oven.Plenty of seasoning, a bay leaf, a red wine reduction, the tin of chopped tomatoes and water.We shall see in a few hours...

sometimes if I don't have liquid stock, I use a teaspoon of vegemite.As long as you have browned meat,seasoned well and have a good bottle of red wine in there, you should be all good.
