That is not the same as our tomato sauce is it? What's a good substitute to use?

no tomato sauce is not the same as ketchup... . which essentially has tomatoes, sugar, vinegar, salt, spices, flavorings, onion, and/or garlic.

you could go simple and use tomato paste + vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper

American tomato sauce is called ketchup.
Ketchup usually contains: tomato concentrate made from red ripe tomatoes, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder, and natural flavours (what ever that is ... ).

Nz tomato sauce is sweeter, so more sugar and less spices.

noone else calls it "tomato sauce"... tomato sauce is not a condiment anywhere else in the world other than Australia, New Zealand and in South Africa... the condiment we call tomato sauce is called ketchup (or catsup) anywhere else in the world

Yeah we know that - I mean "we" that have lived elsewhere and travelled the world :)

"Tomato sauce" usually means a sauce made from sauteed onions, minced beef, herbs and spices and some chopped tomatoes anywhere in the world except NZ (and maybe England and Australia? ).

So "ketchup" is the term widely used to those squezable bottles ... LOL :)

It's tomato sauce in the UK too. In the US they have Heinz tomato ketchup bottles everywhere you go including hotels
