i use edmonds recipe and this time it was sugary more than normal. any tips

Take the time to ensure the sugar is 'melted' in to the milk & no grainy bits remain before you add the butter, condensed milk etc. Another reason for the 'sugary' texture is over beating at the end. Good luck, it can be a bit tricky but worth the effort of getting it right. A bit sugary can still be eaten!
