here's one my great auntie gave me ... (she's in her mid 80's now)
melt: 205 g butter, , 1 C sug and 2 Tbspn golden syrup
Add: 2 beaten eggs
Add: 2 C flour, 2 C sultana's, 1 t vanilla essense, pinch of salt
Bake for 30 mins at 180 deg Cor 350 c F
Ice with lemon icing

chocolate icing is nice on it too- it was a firm favourite for school lunches when the kids were little in this household- still make it when they come home.

Here's one from my mothers old recipe book... sorry it in imperial measurements
5 ozs butter 4 ozs sugar 1 tbsp golden syrup 9 ozs flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 egg 3/4 cup sultanas Melt butter, sugar and syrup in pot, stir until well mixed. Allow to cool, add beaten egg. Add flour and sultanans. Press into sponge roll tin and cook 1/2 hour, gas 4 or 350F degrees . Ice when taken from oven and cut into squares. We always had it iced with lemon icing.

This is the recipe I use.
Melt 125g butter, ½ c sugar & 1 tbsp golden syrup. Add 1 egg, 1 cup flour, and 1 tsp baking powder, 1 cup sultanas & ¼ tsp vanilla essence. Mix, spread into tin and bake at 180c for 20min, Ice when cold with lemon icing.

Hi Darlingmole... I noticed there is no baking powder in your recipe. Did you mean to include it, or does not need need it with the flour (eg is the 2 cups flour self raising flour)? Thanks.
