greenforde, here's a microwave recipe that I kept from this MB - it's thanks to subo.
Golden Syrup or Jam Sponge Pudding [microwaved] 100g each of butter and sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1¼ cups self-raising flour ¼-½ cup milk approximately 4 tbsp golden syrup or jam
Melt the butter and sugar in the microwave. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Fold in the flour and milk. Place the golden syrup or jam in the bottom of a greased 2 litre bowl or glass jug. Pour in the batter. Cover with plastic wrap or a plate and cook for 5-6 minutes.
If you'd like a conventionally cooked one I'm happy to post one or more for you as well - I have several that I have saved over the years from previous threads here on the Recipe MB. :-))

This one is really nice, can be made in the microwave or conventional steamed. So YUM! and only takes a few minutes. Golden syrup or tinned apricots in juice are the favourites in our house Basic Steamed Pudding and Variations (microwave)
1 cup flour¼ cup sugar1tsp baking powder 1 egg½ cup milk50g butter
Sift flour and baking powder into a med sized bowl, In another bowl cream butter & sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat well. Add the milk and dry ingredients alternately to the creamed mixture. Stir to mix. Pour the mixture into a casserole dish, cover and microwave on high for 12-15mins. Serve with custard. Serves 4
Honey Steamed Pudding: Place half a cup of honey in the bowl then add the pudding mixture. Treacle and Nut Pudding: Place 3 Tbsp treacle in base of bowl covered with walnuts. Pour pudding mixture over.

Classic steamed pudding with golden syrup
Serves 8
175 gr butter 175 gr or 11/2 cups self raising flour 175 gr sugar 3 eggs 1 lemon zested and juice 3 tablespoons milk 1.5 litre pudding bowl with lid 1 cup golden syrup
Put the butter, flour, sugar, eggs, lemon zest and half the juice and milk in a food processor and mix.
Pour water into a large saucepan so that it comes half way up the side of the pudding basin when the pudding basin is placed in the pot. Bring to the boil.
Grease the bowl with butter and pour in the golden syrup, add in the other lemon juice. Pour the sponge mixture on top of the syrup and place on the lid of the pudding bowl. Place the pudding basin into the saucepan and put the lid on and cook for two hours. Remember to check the water level in the pot, as you don't want it to boil dry. Add more water if necessary. When the pudding is ready remove the pudding basin from the boiling water and let it rest for a couple of minutes.

Here is a couple of 'tried and true' ones Ginger Syrup Sponge 4 level TBLSP golden syrup 100 gm soft butter 100 gm caster sugar 100 gm self-raising flour 1 level tsp baking power 1.5 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp mixed spice 2 large eggs 2 - 4 TBLSP milk Fill a large saucepan about a third full of water and bring to boil. Spoon 3 TBLSP of the syrup into the bottom of a prepared steam pudding bowl. Put the remaining ingredients and the rest of the syrup into a large mixing bowl and beat for 2 minutes with an electric mixer until the mixture is smooth and light.Add a little more milk if necessary to give a soft dropping consistency. Spoon mixture over the syrup, level the top. Cover & steam for 1.5 hours.
