FONDANT - what does it taste like?

I keep seeing fondant cakes around, and want to get a cake with fondant on it for a birthday, but what does it taste like!
What is the texture like!
Does it affect the cake taste!

I have never had it before and have only seen fondant icing this year!

Most fondant I've ever had seem to be pretty bland (unless they are a specific flavour), mostly just sweet.Having said that, someone will no doubt come along with a totally different opinion.

It does not have a lot of taste. You want the taste to come from what is underneath.

The Satinice brand of fondant is Vanilla flavoured. Bakesls also has a vanilla flavour too. You can also chocolate flavoured, which is brown fondant.

A bit like sweet plasticine - blurg
Really only used for decorative effect - would always prefer a cake without it myself

I am a cake decorator and get alot of comments on how bland Fondant is. I totally agree, sweet plasticine! Yes it is primarily for decorative purposes. However, I have just made marshmellow fondant which is alot nicer. I underlay all my cakes using a dark chocolate ganache, this is always a hit and detracts from the standard fondant taste.
