Is an aluminium gem-iron as good as a cast-iron

one! I've only ever known gems baked in a cast-iron one.(wish I had it now.it was my Mum's)

Not in my opinion. The cast iron holds the heat better to get the "sizzle" needed for gems.
I still have my old one and even tho damn heavy on my old hands, I won't part with it.
Try the op shops, sometimes you can be lucky enough to pick one up there. They sell at top dollar on TM.

Aluminium is a great conductor of heat, next to copper, however, the cast iron is alot heavier and does hold the heat well.

You can buy them new, but they are pricey!
