Frosting under fondant?

I'm attempting to make my wee girl a 3rd bday cake. I want to ice it with fondant but not sure what type of frosting to ice the cake with before I put the fondant icing on! Anyone know! Thanks!

I'd use butter cream.

125 gm butter
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
2 T milk

beat butter in electric mixer until pale, gradually add half of the icing sugar beating constantly then add milk followed by remaining icing sugar, still beating.

Make sure that the butter cream is as smooth as possible on the cake so that it doesn't show under the fondant.

Frosting and fondant - wouldn't that be a bit OTT on the sweetness! If it's just to get the fondant to stick to the cake then traditionally you use sieved, warmed jam such as apricot painted over the cake and then cover with fondant.

I often just used warmed jam or golden syrup or somthing but often cake makers use butter cream.

yep this works fine with fruit cake - I find that jam soaks straight into any other flavoured cake and fondant won't stick. If it's too sweet people can just pull the fondant off.

Have never had a problem with jam sinking into chocolate or butter cake
