24 slices white sliced bread
125g butter, melted
For the filling:
60g butter
1/3 cup plain flour
2 cups milk
salt and pepper
1 teaspoon mustard
340g tin asparagus
60g cheddar cheese, gratedPreheat oven to 180°C or 160°C fan-forced. Lightly grease a 24-hole patty tin.

Remove the crusts from the bread. Trim about 3cm from 2 sides of the bread to make smaller slices to fit into patty tins (reserve the extra bread for making bread crumbs).
Flatten bread slightly and place in the patty tins. Brush with the melted butter. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.

Prepare filling:
Heat butter in a pan. Add flour and stir until combined. Remove from heat and gradually add the milk; whisking well. Return to heat, stir until sauce boils and thickens. Simmer, uncovered, for 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add mustard, stir until combined.
Drain 340g can asparagus and chop roughly. Add to sauce along with 60g grated cheddar cheese. Stir until cheese melts.
