Madeira cake, would you ice it?

dibble35, Nov 9, 2:12am
Most madeira cakes i've eaten have never had any icing or decorating on them, but making one for a shared lunch and want it to look a bit special. Would cream cheese icing be the best! Or maybe a regular lemony icing. TIA

I would just dust with icing sugar.Maybe get a fancy paper doily, lay it over the cake, dust .then remove the doily to reveal a pretty pattern.

Madeira Cake isn't usually iced but if you want to make it look special I think the lemon flavoured butter icing would be preferable. In my humble opinion cream cheese icing would be much too rich.

Yes.lemon, coconut, or passionfruit is also nice for a special occassion.

No I wouldn't ice it but I have seen them baked with lemon or orange slices on top

I do the sifted icing sugar over the doily trick for plain cakes.
A fancy look without so many calories.

Actually I think it's slices of glace or candied lemon or orange peel like this

But a drizzle of lemon glace icing, not covering the whole cake, could look good too

That looks extra good on ginger or chocolate cake.I sometimes do a zig-zag drizzle of very thin icing to give a finished look to a cake.

Dribble some lemon icing and decorate with a couple of slices of lemon, cut and then folded (if you know what I mean!)Looks a bit special.

So buttery and tasty that it doesn't need icing. My recipe calls for mixed peel to be put on top part way through cooking.

Thanks, Maybe just a dusting of icing sugar then, wont detract from the taste of the already delicious cake
