We used to (back in 70's) put oil into the pot and then cook things like cubes of steak, sausage, fish dipped in batter etc.Not very healthy but yummy and a very social meal.

Funny - we now have to have the Christmas tradition of...chop suey.Mmmmhmmmm, we are white, Scottish/English blood but ma and pa were taught this dish in the 60s by polynesian friends!!

for one of my daughters' bithdays (16th?) I had a fondue party. We had a cheese, a chocolate and an oil. I did all the usual and also made some bread dough, rolled it into tiny balls and deep fried them in the oil as we went. As they came out the girls dipped them in sugar and cinnamon. Hmmm.
