something it is about how you package it... how about russian fudge (and packed into tupperware, so it doesn't rattle around).
or something you make when you get there: I do a banoffee pie which is a sponge/pie thingy (from the deli department) with carmel yoghurt and bananas and cocoa - it is really about construction - but a great dessert
what about asking if MIL is doing a ham - then have a row of condiments (pickle, chutney, carmelised onions etc)

Perhaps a cold meat platter with some cheese, pickled onions and gherkins thrown in as well

pack your contribution in air tight containers, then into a chilly bin, with lots of slicker pads or maybe even ice cubes

Maybe a steamed pudding, take ingredients for ambrosia (very easy and quick to assemble on arrival).Make a platter of fun finger desserts, such as mallowpuff xmas pies, fudges, rum balls, shortbreads half dipped in melted choc, strawberries, cherries, and xmas chocolates.Pop them into little containers for travel, and take a nice platter to assemble them on when you get there.
Bacon & egg pie is always a favourite, Christmas cake (put the icing on when u get there), fancy sandwiches, Christmas cookies. Put all these in freezer before u travel. Can also look up freezer recipes:
